Never had poke before but if youve had good sushi or sashimi you can give a credible comparison. Got 2 type regular bowl of ahi. It was a pretty generous portion to me. Definitely enjoyed the wasabi flavor vice the original. Although I read that most choices were spicy I didnt find any to be so and Im not a very strong spice eater. Parking is a hassle but plenty nearby if you can walk a block.
Typical hole in the wall kind of restaurant which I assume is always busy no matter what time you go. Ordering is made easy with limited options that you chose from as you go down the line. Fresh tasting fish that leaves a little spice in your mouth! Definitely recommend if you haven’t tried a poke bowl before.
This unassuming little place serves such yummy poke! For about $8.5 you get poke bowl w drinks. You can choose different flavours like wasabi/ Hawaii/ chilli etc and choose ahi (tuna) or Taki (octopus I think) and brown /white rice.So good I want to go back again! pigouttravels.wordpress.com
This unassuming place has remarkably fresh poke! I still can taste the fresh poke & prompt service. As a frame of reference, I ate Poke everyday from various places on the islands we toured. This is the top Honolulu place.Price was very reasonable considering how fresh the fish is. We ordered #1, #5 & #8. #5 was the spiciest followed by #8. Flavors & texture was great – simple but well presented/prepared. We stayed a bit far from Ono Seafood so I opted to Uber to/from the restaurant & bring the food back to our room & it worked out great.Overall, Ono Grinds that were No Ka Oi! Mahalo for such a great food!!!
It was my first poke experience and I suspect nothing will ever compare. It was so good I ventured there twice during my trip for lunch (#1, Tuna). I went during an off hour (around 3 pm) and the wait was minimal – maybe ten minutes. I’ve rarely had seafood this good – it is worth the trip when you are in town.Down the street is Leonard’s Bakery, worth a dedicated visit on its own; but if you have limited time, you may want to eat here for lunch and walk down there for a malasada or two – but wait a little while after you finish your experience here and savor the poke you just had.Easy to get to on TheBus from anywhere, including Waikiki. If you eat there you will be somewhat exposed to the sun, so you may want to put on sunscreen before venturing out.
This little shop sure does provide some amazing pok. Having recently heard of Ono Seafood from a lot of food bloggers and youtubers, I had to see if the hype was real and my friends, it sure is! Fresh marinated ahi over a bed of brown rice with a drink of choice for only $9USD was definitely worth it! If I wasn’t leaving tomorrow, I’d be going back for a meal everyday. We ordered the Hawaiian, Spicy and Wasabi Ahi. My personal favourite was the spicy ahi, it had a creamy sauce with fish roe inside. I’m not one who can handle spice but this was manageable, it did provide a good kick. Hawaiian Ahi came in at a close second with a nice hint of sesame oil in the marinade and the Wasabi Ahi was good.
We ordered a combo of the Spicy Ahi and Shoyu Ahi Poke on brown rice. The Spicy Ahi was our favourite of the two, it wasn’t really spicy as the name suggests but fresh ahi cubes in creamy mayo is always going to be a winning combo. The Shoyu was a bit on the saltier side with a strong soy sauce flavour. I think what made the poke shine were the generous servings of ahi and as mentioned earlier, the freshness of the fish but overall I think I expected a bit more due to all the hype from the reviews (perhaps some toppings and sides to give it a bit more texture) but I wasn’t too disappointed, you definitely get bang for your buck.
