I liked it – sort of. Marla and I continued our review of Kailua-Kona’s Happy Hour places. Today was a Sunday so our choices were a bit more limited. We decided to go to the Billfish Bar in the King Kam Marriott. While all the other happy hour places we visited were eclectic and kind of funky the Billfish is a lot more sedate and tranquil. It overlooks the little protected beach by the heritage village then across the Kailua Kona bay. We watched Canoe teams head out to practice and a few people strolling through the sandy bay.Service was actually pretty good. They were there when you wanted them to be and away when you didn’t need them. The deal with their happy hour was $3.50 domestic tap beers. The beers were good but served in a plastic glass – Marla said ‘ew’ but we were near the pool so that probably had something to do with it. Sitting near the pool is not as big a deal as one might think. There were quite a few kids in the pool area so it was kind of noisy. For eats we tried the appy plate of garlic fries served with truffle oil, parma, and ailoli sauce. They were very good and we were served enough of them that we couldn’t finish the plate. At $7.50 it was a good value too.I guess only thing i didn’t like about the place was that it felt like a spot you could take your mother-in-law. There was nothing offensive, nothing exciting, just incredibly safe.
