We settled for a reservation with Izakaya Matsu when Sansei, our first choice, was fully booked. We were fairly optimistic about this place based on reviews. The experience we had compelled me to offer a review of my own. To put it bluntly, this was the worst dining experience in our 2 weeks in Maui. The portions were extremely small and overpriced. I’ve never had sashimi sliced so thin before and the salmon was still partially frozen (an absolute no no for me when it comes to sushi – how hard it is to thaw the fish before you serve it??). We spent over $110 for 4 people and we were talking about where to eat next by the time dessert arrived (for 4 slim Asians with a modest appetite, that is bad). On top of it all, it was uncomfortably hot in the small restaurant with no AC or even music to give you any kind of relaxation. Our table was right in front of the stand-up cooler and it felt like a heater blasting behind me. Do yourself a favour and avoid this place – your money is much better spent elsewhere!
Fantastic find!. Small little place in a strip mall. Only one waitress but super efficient and over the top friendly. The food is pretty traditional and can be pricy but the specials are always delicious and the noodles done right. Izakaya small plates are all quite tasty and perfect for sharing over a beer or sake. Will definitely be back!!
In truth, one if the best Japanese restaurants I’ve been to. Thoroughly great. Go. You should go.
Absolutely wonderful. Very traditional Japanese sushi and shashimi. Wonderful service. The atmosphere is so-so, but the food will make you forget anything else. Simple, fresh, well presented and pure. We absolutely loved it. Helpful staff. Don’t bother with sansei down the street where you’ll see more ceasar salads go by than nigiri. We will definitely go back!
Hidden Gem!. We enjoyed two suppers and had great meals and outstanding service. Very good selection and sashimi was top notch. Very good choice of cold sake. Miso butterfish and Dynamite dish were delicious. Good value so make a reservation, they’re always busy.
Izakaya Matsu. Great traditional Japanese restaurant. The sushi is good and the kitchen food is excellent. You will like it.
Excellent, authentic Japanese food, especially for Maui, which is remarkable for its dearth of Chinese and Japanese food. This is a real find.
