A trip to Maui isn’t complete without Sushi Paradise, just ask the locals in the know. Better prepared and fresher than sushi in most large cities, it’s the island version of Jiro Dreams of Sushi. One man, his impeccable tastes, and his passion for fish. His assistant does the books, serves the booze and buys the vegetables. He buts the fish from the fishermen and prepares it with integrity. They purposely limit their size so as to accommodate their guests as best they can. There will be a wait at times, so reset your expectations. Arrive at opening if you have less patience.
If you are from a big city like Chicago, and you are used to good food, you WILL NOT like this place. The food is mediocre at best. The small selection of rolls are all slathered in spicy mayo sauce. Have sushi back home and save yourself.
I almost don’t want to tell you….. …how good this place is so I can always get a seat at the bar. We went on a Friday and waited outside for 30 minutes, but there was no need. Other than a 4-top, who seemed to be pals with the owners, the place was ours. One chef is all, it’s true. He does it all, and his work is beautiful. He’s an older Japanese man and clearly this is his life’s work/career. He is serious. The fish is fresh and delicious. The woman server seems to operate as if they are in the middle of the dinner rush at all times (re: 6 people in house at this time) – so I’d have to ask anything I wanted to know, but she was kind and helpful in all her responses. We had the sashimi sampler, an additional (huge, 8 piece) order of the local ahi, the sake sampler plus one order of the $9.50 sake; one yellowtail roll and one green tea: and an order of masago with quail egg – $112. I was shocked as I figured on $200+. Note to order all that you want as he makes each party’s complete order all at once. If he moves on – so do you – to the back of the line. A must on every visit to Maui, we prefer it significantly over Sansei’s Americanized (though creative) rolls. Sushi Paradise offers a much more authentic sushi experience with no fanfare – just killer sushi, artfully prepared by an experienced chef who takes much pride in his work!
Excellent sushi and sashimi, make res or if you want the sushi bar, show up at 5:30 when they open at 6:00 it will be packed. Have been going for 12 years, never a problem, not a fast food restaurant, if you want that go to macd.
Aji = awesome. Everything we ordered was excellent & reasonably priced.
Paradise indeed. Worth the drive to find this little place. If you have a traditional sushi/sashimi craving, don’t miss this place
