Great gluten free pizza. The gluten free pizza at Kilauea Bakery is outstanding! It has no icky after taste. The only gluten free pizza I’ve liked better is The Pie in Salt Lake City. None of the gluten free pizzas I’ve eaten in Spokane are as tasty as the pizza at Kilauea bakery. All gluten free pizzas are medium sized, on the generous side. The pizza was large enough to fill my husband and me. Like everything else on the island, their pizza isn’t cheap. It will set you back about $25.00 for a medium, gluten free gourmet pizza. But its worth it. Medium pizzas can be made half and half. We chose half shrimp scampi and half vegetable pesto. Both were delicious. I was a bit worried about shrimp scampi because some high concept recipes flounder upon execution. The shrimp scampi pizza was great and the capers and fresh lemon slices added complexity to the red sauce.My stepdaughter had a meat ball panini, which she couldn’t finish. My husband polished it off the next evening. Both agreed it was yummy.Heres something of note for germaphobes. The shopping center for Kilauea Bakery doesn’t have indoor toilets. They are port-a-potties. While the hygiene of the facilities isn’t as bad as some campsite pit toilets; they aren’t particularly clean. Hands are washed outdoors on a spigot connected to the exterior of one to the buildings.We are planning a return visit. Kauai is so magical. Kilauea Bakery is on the return list.
The daily special — a grilled chicken sandwich with pesto sauce — was good, exactly what you’d expect — thick bread, healthy spread of pesto sauce on the bread, grilled chicken, mozz cheese with tomato. But please, please save room for the bread pudding — a lucious slab of perfectly moist bread baked into a delicate pudding studded with chocolate chips. The crust on the bread pudding has a toothy crunch. It’s really perfect. Counter service. Find a seat outside under umbrellas or a broad awning. Skip the pizza.
