Fresh, tasty, reliable. The quality of Cantonese cuisine in Honolulu is so variable that it’s hard to know where to start. Some offerings are so cornstarch-gloppy and msg-laden that you have to wonder how the restaurants stay in business. Asia Manoa, however, has been so reliably good to me that I don’t feel the need to go anywhere else. You can start with the stand-bys and spread your wings from there. Even something as pedestrian as beef with broccoli is fresher and lighter than I’ve tasted anywhere else. The cold ginger chicken come across as bright and just-salty-enough; after years of bland, oily chicken, I imagine this is the way it’s supposed to taste. The mu shu pork is slightly sweet and surprisingly refreshing. One absolute favorite is the Salt and Pepper Pork Chop. Deep fried local pork, fat included. One bite tells you: pork is supposed to have fat. Diet tomorrow. The menu also goes further than the Cantonese chop suey houses of my youth. You’ll find Northern Chinese dishes and casseroles, as well. Add an always-friendly wait staff and quick kitchen turnaround and Asia Manoa emerges as my single favorite Chinese restaurant. Highly recommended for a no-fuss lunch or dinner.
