Portions were disappointing and the menu is very limited after 2pm. The satay dipping sauce was flavorful in a really good way but the kahlua pork on the kahlua pizza and kid’s luau plate was disappointingly lacking in flavor.

Volcano House Bar food needs a tweak. Traveling with people who have food allergies AND like to eat out is always, adventurous. We turned up famished to Volcano House at the Volcano National Park on Hawaii Big Island. They could slot us into their restaurant but not right away so we ate in the bar area, with the view of the Caldera at night. One main meal gluten free a chilli prawn (shrimp), rice & salad but friend had to refrain from the salad as was already dressed with citrus and nut dressing. Everything is prepped and there was no un-coated piece of protein in kitchen that didn’t have some gluten component so shrimp was it. Other friends didn’t fancy prawns so they went for appetisers – a taster plate and pulled pork (GF) sliders without the buns. I had ordered the avocado dip and vege chips for us all as GF and only lime in avocado dip. The lobster and crab cakes I had were delicious. All beautifully presented. The use of rice flour instead of wheat, for coatings and crisping, would have broadened our selection. Lastly only icecream and sorbet GF when the other options sounded so enticing. Maybe they could tweak their menu a little to offer a growing allergy travelling visitors.
Family Dinner. Other than the price, which doesn’t bother me at all but if you are looking for a cheap meal this isn’t a place for you, I would have to admit the place is pretty amazing. We were seated almost immediately. Then there’s the fantastic view which they turn off the lights so you can see the glow of the lava even better. The atmosphere is really cool, it’s like an old building that has been kept very well and is interesting to look at if that’s your thing. Also, the flow of the food from appetizer to meals is almost flawless, it’s not too soon or too long between courses. Bill, our waiter, made sure everything was OK and was on it. Needless to say if I get a chance to eat here again, I certainly won’t turn it down.
OK food, great view. The food was nothing to write home about, but overall we enjoyed ourselves here as the view was fantastic. With a decent selection of beers, it was a nice place to relax after a long day of hiking.
We had an unpleasant experience. We had a reservation for 630 and wasn’t sat until 645. So before dinner we went to the bar to grab a drink. We waited for fifteen mins before we were acknowledged. After being sat food took forever and the order was incorrect. Had to wait longer. However, the volcano was glowing and the lights were turned off. Food worth quarter of the price but the view was priceless. I would take my mama there for the view. Just know what you’re getting into.
Overpriced. Granted, they are in a unique position and probably had to close down during the federal shutdown, so maybe they are trying to make up for lost funds. However, as a diner that’s not my problem. Food was average to mediocre, service was incredibly slow. Avoid this restaurant and find something in town. It can’t be any worse.
