Great meal. I’m a very picky eater with a seafood allergy and they were able to accommodate no problem. Do not be in a rush, they take their time. They are not a friendly bunch but do take pride in their food. The Mediterranean salad was excellent. The pasta dishes were great. We didn’t know it was BYOB so we missed out on wine. One thing: this place desperately needs a deep cleaning. There are layers of dirt on the woodwork that is very hard to ignore. But the food I would definitely recommend & go back for more
Best Italian in Hawaii. I have been coming to Paolo’s for over a decade since I was a little girl and I have had nothing but fantastic experiences at this place. The seafood cioppino is superb- always a fresh seafood variety in a homemade tomato base. The atmosphere is charming and low key- what you would expect on Hilo side. Very quiet with a dim candlelight vibe. I’ve traveled through Italy and all I can say is that Paolo’s easily competes with any trattoria you might find in the streets of Rome. Five stars!
Paolo is your Italian grandfather, he has a fiery temper and serves great food. Previous reviews likening him to a soup nazi may be a little extreme, and accusations of false advertising are just plain wrong. Everything from the sauce to the pasta to the bread is handmade. I know this because I have labored along side Paolo early morning making sure everything is fresh and ready for a delectably authentic Italian dinner.
Don’t bother.. We were waiting patiently for our food when Paolo burst out of the kitchen, stomped over to the door, flipped the closed sign, stated loudly NO FOOD FOR YOU! Beginning of the end- bread cheapest variety at KTA, no spices for the oil dip, soup barely passable. The outburst came after we had waited over an hour and a half. An exodus of patrons from a small restaurant, that is chef owned, before being served is a sad event. When we walked by the restaurant later paolo was sitting in the dark drinking wine! My recommendation is don’t bother – Seinfeld’s soup nazi was funny–Paolo’s is tragic.
Delicious. We had bread salad appetizer, primavera with homemade spinach pasta, and spouse had a special with the same pasta and Italian sausage and shiitake mushrooms. Focaccia was freshly baked. We were very pleased. Service was friendly and attentive.
