Get the veg ramen. Every time I come across a more-than-decent restaurant in ‘Aiea/Pearl City, I can’t help but get excited. It’s the neighborhood where I grew up and still reside part-time, and to see its culinary offerings expand and improve makes me very happy.Little Ichiben boasts a clean, modern-looking (and graciously well-air-conditioned) spot whose staff never stops smiling and whose ramen is unlike what we’re used to around here. The broth, simmered with a variety of vegetables and attentively skimmed, is rich, with no MSG other than the savory glutamic acid that naturally occurs in shiitake mushrooms, with a pungent dose of garlic that deters others but finds favor in this Korean. Their locally made noodles are resilient and chewy, like well-made dried spaghetti, evoking the traditional alkaline noodles so ubiquitous in Japan and that you never encounter in Hawai’i.I always enjoy the shoyu vegetable ramen, heaped with choy sum, bamboo shoots, seaweed (another natural source of MSG that doesn’t give you the aches afterward) and mung-bean sprouts. The condiment offerings are few — shichimi, rice vinegar and shoyu — and occupy adorable glass dispensers. No spicy miso, sesame or white pepper here, and that doesn’t bother me since the broth requires no embellishment.Gyoza, stuffed with gingered pork and scallions, are crisp and melt in your mouth. I absolutely love them.My one [minor] complaint would be that there is no counter where solo diners can slurp up a quick meal, but the high-backed booths and surprisingly well-spread out tables do just fine. And once my sexy black ceramic bowl of steaming, salty goodness arrives, I don’t really care.
Super clean. Great food. Definetly try the Kalbi.
I liked it because it was very clean. The Ichiben noodles remind me of Chinese noodles and they pack a lot of goodies in there. The broth I had my own negative opionions on the aroma but it could have been because I may have been becoming sick. The service is good too. Not me favorite noodles bit I give ut good recomendation.
Tasty with Goodness. My family & I had the wonderful Noodle Soup & loved the Garlic on top of their Char Shu Fried Rice.. To sum it up, it was Very Tasty. Also, to find out the Chicken base soup is healthy is added plus. Definitely recommend this! Tony H.
