My husband corrected me– it was awful Ono not awful ahi.16 Jan, 2015This place was terrible. The concierge at our hotel must have received a kickback. The beet salad was really small. The green salad with hearts of palm was bitter and a microscope was needed to actually see the hearts of palm. The shrimp fettuccine carbonara had no carbonara and the ahi was hard as a rock and inedible. The dessert was ok. Even with having the awful ahi removed from the tab, the $100 price was not worth it. I have eaten in a lot of high end restaurants in my life: this is a pretender to the throne. And by the way, if I wanted a European atmosphere, I would have gone to Europe, not Kaua’i.
There is nothing better than eating at a restaurant that uses local produce so elegantly. The poke sashimi was fresh and delicate with a bit of sriacha paste for zing made it out of this world! The ahi was perfectly cooked with the broad bean risotto and bok Choy which was a perfect accompaniment . My blueberry available martini was also perfectly balanced . Nothing short of an amazing meal with 10/10 service as usual with the service in Hawaii. A truly memorable meal .
We enjoyed the ambiance and service at red salt. The foodwas ok. My fianc really enjoyed his shrimp pasta however the Ono was flavorless and came out cold.
Walking into Red Salt one encounters a long, nicely laid out bar with spread out comfortable seats. The pool area is the view on the left. We were warmly greeted and shown to our table. Our waitress was there promptly and delivered a wonderful, generously poured Mai tai. I had a large San Pelegrino. They also had Kaliber, my favorite non-alcoholic beer. Wonderful bread followed, freshly baked with butter & red salt. The diver’s scallops appetizer was beautifully presented, with pea shoots, fresh potato crisps and a wonderful sauce. Visual presentation of food is an art. Red Salt masters that art. After a week of fish on Kauai we chose New York and filet steaks. Incredible cuts of meat perfectly cooked to order, no waste fat, tender and juicy. What made their presentation unique was long rectangular trays for each of us with 4 dipping sauces: bernaise, Madagascar pepper, horseradish and ginger soy. Mmmm! Dessert was a macadamia/ chocolate torte. 10 out of 10 for ambiance, flavor, presentation, and staff friendliness!
The setting and decor are beautiful, however, it appears the bar/restaurant are not well managed. It took us approximately 15 mins to be waited on to order drinks and another 10-15 mins to receive them. The server was very pleasant – appeared to be lack of bar tending support . Once seated for dinner, service was mediocre at best— Tom, our waiter was polite but not efficient. We had more drinks at the table, when ordering- they were out of the most popular fish (oho) but all entrees we ordered were great. My husband ordered 3 items-shrimp , soup and lobster ravioli– 3 of us were almost done with our meals before my husband had to ask for his entree. We were never asked if we wanted another bottle of wine, plates were not cleared, drink order was wrong. Great food, bad experience for what should be a high end establishment.
One of the best meals we have had in a while, and by far the best we had on Kauai. Outstanding in both quality and presentation: treat yourself to the Red Salt experience while you’re on Kauai!
Mismanaged but good food. We were annoyed with the mismanagement of our reservation and the snotty attitude of the maitre d.Once we were allowed to be seated our server was good and the several courses we ordered were outstanding.Excellent dining should be accompanied by excellent front of the house hospitality. We could have done without the attitude on our arrival. Coupled by the too aggressive valet parking attendants, it was an unpleasant way to be greeted on our special occasion dinner.
