Had a layover in Honolulu and first time in Hawaii and wanted to find something to eat. First option was Burger King but there was a long line so went to Lahaina chicken next to it as there was only one customer. What I was served exceeded my expectations and very delicious and tasted better than I thought. I ordered a double combo: chicken thigh, prime ribs, mash, fried rice and macaroni. Shared with my two children and we were very full. Staff were friendly and helpful. I will definitely be coming through here again on my next layover.

Hell yeah! After so many years of looking forward to it, I finally have gotten to the United States of America. I won’t pull anyone’s leg here, a big part of what I have been looking forward to ever since is the eating. Long story short, I have found myself in Hawaii (courtesy of my parents, thank you mum and dad). This is the trip of a lifetime, and hopefully only one of many around here (mainland included of course). As with most trips that go overseas and/or to smaller locations, that is often met with stay overs at major airports. Around the Honolulu Airport, there was a couple of hours to wait around before boarding the plane for Kauai. When it comes to food and coffee, I am one opportunistic bastard. Therefore while managing to keep close quarters to the gate I went around the terminal and to see what was available. Most of it is fast food, or something in a similar vein. There was one choice that was (probably) better quality, and more in vein of the sit-down meal, however, I am a bit mindful about getting the plane and grabbing it to go is the best option. Thus, we come to Lahania Chicken Company. Going here, I did not have too higher expectations for this place – it looked like a standard, throwaway joint selling some fast food. Upon eating it, blow me down because it hit the spot quite hard. Both its layout, and its menu are simple to describe. With great efficiency, the service and layout act a lot like a cafeteria. Go up one end and place your order accordingly, next they fill a takeaway contained with whatever was ordered, along with any extras on the side or drinks being requested. At the other end, pay and go. Service is kind of surly and done with occasional grunts, but nothing too deterring. What is on offer with the menu, is a range of combos that start with either one or two meats. By default, each meal comes with a choice of three sides that can be either side salads, or roast vegetables. Afterwards, extras can be ordered such as salads, soup and drinks. That is it, in a nutshell. I ordered a two piece feed of fried chicken, ordering dark meat, and the sides I got were a macaroni salad, some coleslaw and a mixed rice. Taking this back to the gate, I fully intended on sharing it (… but I always do when I can). The serving size was massive, and there was a plentiful amount of each item. Even the bits of chicken were huge. And this was some of the best fried chicken that I have ever had. The flesh was tender, and juicy. It pulled apart very well from the bone, and had a great flavour throughout. I make no implications that the chicken skin has long been one of my favourite parts of the meat, and the way they had managed to cook these pieces so well had the skin and the batter essentially become one form. It was like an oily dream come true. The sides were just as good. It had some of the freshest coleslaw I have tasted, mixed with just the right amount of mayonnaise and it had a great crunch to it. The pasta in the macaroni salad was al dente, and was mixed with some onion and capsicum plus a creamy dressing. Then the well steamed rice came, which was brown, and that was hot and fluffy. Both my parents were also impressed, which is something to say for the quality. For what this place was, I was definitely satiated afterwards. That is why at the last minute I decided to bump it up to a 4.0. Credit is deserved where it is due. Ultimately, it is a venture for wholesome, filling fare. All aspects about it are up to an acceptable level, and it made for a filling meal that was satisfying and good value. Count me as surprised one last time. Any fellow Americans reading this, this review is the first taste of food on your home soil that I have experienced. This is merely some airport fare made to just eat while waiting, and even this represents a good par. What I can say is that we are off to a very good start, and many more brilliant meals are to come. I am just salivating at the thought already.

Buffet Style Food – Good Tasting Chicken. Lahaina Chicken is a buffet style restaurant on the concourse. On one side are chicken dishes. On the other are pasta dishes. The baked chicken is served with fairly large portions. I had the mushroom chicken. It was decent, and I definitely had plenty of food with the combo. You get three sides from the buffet. I picked the white rice, coleslaw and mixed veggies. It was okay. The white rice ended up being perfect for pouring the mushroom sauce over the chicken and rice. This place is fine for airport food, and it’s priced like you would expect in an airport.
