Atmosphere is lovely. Food was outstanding. Service was so slow. So so slow. For a place this expensive (ie $12 draft beer and $20+ ramen) I expect way better service.
Picture this: My lovely bride and I are enjoying her business trip to Honolulu. I’m a cheapo, but I offered to take my lover girl out to a $100 steak dinner. We stroll around the International Market – She chooses this restaurant, heard stuff about it from her colleagues. Okay, high prices and dark dining room – what could go wrong? We order dinner – I go for the locally raised New York cut. Since I’m such a rube I consulted the waitress and my lover girl regarding how to order. We settle on MEDIUM WELL – just a little pink in the middle. My sides were asparagus and beans, both were very good. The New York steak not so much. I cut a tip from the end – and chewed, and chewed, and chewed…. Tough for a New York, is this what Hawaiian cows produce – chew, chew, chew – finally I am able to choke down the first bite. I tried a piece cut from the other end. Same chewfest – is this a fancy steak or a tendon? I decided to choke down a another bite and not complain – I was on a date with my lovely bride, I’m not gonna be a whiny beach. When the waitress checked on us I made the mistake of mentioning the extreme chewiness of the New York steak. On the table it was too dark to notice but, when held up to the light it was literally dripping raw blood where I had cut. The ‘steak’ only a small rim of seared surface – bloody all the way through. The waitress took it back. The waitress was gone so long that I had time to get physically sick at the thought of having eaten raw cow blood – I don’t even like licking my own blood much less a cow I never met. I wish I was the kind of person who would just sit there and dutifully eat their second attempt at providing a properly prepared meal. I got too sick and had to leave my lovely bride at the table to deal with them. She would not walk out with me and chased me away from the table (this is not a good date) – thanks for helping my lovely bride find out how disgusting I am (I did not sheepishly sit like a punk and ‘thank you sir, may I have another’). So now I am sick, outside of the restaurant, and my bride is dealing with the manager. They made my lovely bride pay and the waitress accepted a $10 tip – that was a chance for them to do the right thing. They should have found me outside, apologized, and not charged us for their insulting attempt at food. Maybe if I was a rich white guy it may have gone differently – I am neither, should have stayed in my lane.My advice – bring a flashlight and huge skepticism when you arrive. Actually, don’t arrive at all – go anywhere else – you will be better off!
This restaurant embodies a farm to table menu with a bit of island flair. We truly enjoyed our meals and could not have been any happier with the food. Chef Yamaguchi has not strayed too far from his roots in Roys but Eating House offers what feels like a more earthy fare.
