This restaurant was very elegant which was the perfect excuse for me to dress up. My friend was able to get away with a polo and shorts and I didn’t feel out of place in a long dress. We had cocktails in the lounge while we waited for our table. The whole place is dimly lit, detailed in dark wood molding, waiters in tuxes, very nice. Ordered escargot for an appetizer and they were incredible! We got the filet and lobster tail and the tomahawk steak for the main course….they were absolutely fantastic. I’m a picky steak eater and the temperature was perfect; the lobster was sweet and tender. Service was good and food was perfect. Definitely recommend!
Hys is an institution, an old fashioned well honed up class restaurant. In Hawaii where you can go basically anywhere with thongs and singlets, this establishments insists on collard shirt and cover toes (I like it!)It not on the main drag, so you need to look it up, however as you walk down the driveway and approach the two big wooden doors and man will open them for you, quite old fashioned but, welcoming indeed. Then upon entry you will feel the warmth of the dark timber and a host of people at the till eager to assist you, each guest is asked the same question: Do you have a reservation for without one you will not be seated. There are several levels and seating areas, you can have a drink at the bar, the seating area where you may want to have a conversation, chill and listen to the gentle guitarist. Once seated at your table, you will undoubtedly see the broiler/grill in the glass room. This restaurant is foremost a steak house however you can get a whole bunch of other dishes if your not a carnivore, we started with some champagne, an Aperol with a orange twist and soda, followed by the Duck Foie Gras with Poached Figs and BriochePan-Seared with Balsamic Reduction and some fruits and the Escargot which came out in n escargot dish with garlic butter and crumbs and was really sensational, in fact both starters were. Our mains consisted of a pound of Alaskan King Crab legs and melted butter, a eye fillet steak that was just magnificent and the Fred Flintstone TBone steak (I was not that impressed with the TBone) typically I get the eye fillet when there but today I was seated next to the glass broiler room and got too excited about the dinosaur sized steaks. We also have the grilled asparagus and a super tangy dipping sauce that was just superb. Our waiter Ryan was exceptional, he knew it was my wife’s birthday so he brought out a cheese cake with lite candles an wished her a happy birthday. We also had a Crme Brul` with Banana (Not over excited by it) but the service made up for any imperfections, in fact t is up there with the very best of global restaurants for me with service. We quite like the fact all servers wear black buttoned up suits, speak elegantly and go beyond to serve you.at $60.00 for a tip you would expect that right..but its nice to have that service level regardless of the cost. This place is not cheap so if you are after cheap eats stay way, this is a world class restaurant at the highest level of service.I think one point of disappointment is that they do not know you have been there before, we would have dined there around 12 times and each time you are asked have you dined with us before Sir, a basic CRM with you details would be a good investment. Im giving them 5 for the service, not the TBone that was too over cooked.
This is an old school steakhouse restaurant. Love the interior. Every dish is beautiful especially the scallop entree and flamingyon. Service is great. To me, it’s a must-go place if visiting Honolulu in the future.
