Excellent food and service! Mahalo!
Good food, but a couple of annoyances. On our last evening in Hawaii, my Mom wanted good Mexican food. This seemed like the best bet and was ultimately worth the 40 minute drive from our hotel. I was concerned there would be a long wait, but luckily, we were seated right away. Unlike some of the other reviews claim, we had great service and the food was delicious. My Mom loved her margaritas and said they were boozier than most places make them. I have just a few complaints: They only give you a handful of chips to share between 2 people, and one small bowl of pico de gallo and one small bowl of salsa roja. Each on its own is fairly tasteless, but if you combine them, it’s a decent and unique salsa. But if you want more salsa or chips, it’s an additional $2.50. And if you get a to go order apparently, they don’t give you any free chips at all. The fajitas were delicious and had grilled chicken, bell peppers, zucchini and onions. They come with two flour or corn tortillas. If you want more tortillas, it’s another $2.50 for two tortillas. I know this is Hawaii, but that is outrageous to me. Most Mexican places give you at least three with an order and some give four. Lastly, they don’t appear to offer any kind of cheese dip or guacamole to go with the chips as an appetizer. Check it out if in the area and see what you think.
Myself. I am surprised at a few negative reviews. I go to Kaua’i every year, and I always go to Monico’s at least twice. The fish tacos are made with fresh catch of the day and can vary. Great sauce on top. Great Margaritas. I would suggest going early as they do get busy. No alcohol is served on the outside patio. Monico is in the kitchen and his family work the floors.
Shameful!. I am shocked to find a mediocre Mexican restaurant who charges an extra $2.50 for extra chips. They give you a basket half full of dull chips with no flavor, and because the service is so slow, you can’t help but eat them. But if you run out of them, you have to pay an exhorbitant $2.50 for more. I ate Chicken Fahitas which could fill 4 flour tortillas, but I only received two of them. If I wanted two more… you guessed it, another $2.50.Really sad and I would never return, ever. Oh, and one more thing, if you are sitting outside, if you don’t mind the traffic noise, I also hope the occasional sewage smell doesn’t bother you either.Yuck!!
Poor service. One hour & a half waiting for our order seated in the restaurant. waitress was never back after drinks were served. When we complained we were told that Take Out orders were more of a priority. Never again. If you are not locals or take out you don’ t exist.
Good food. Noisy. Wait staff real nice and attentive. Mahi on tostada and taco was great.
