My previous experiences at Big Bun were great, however the last three times I’ve Been here, it’s been a bad experience. REALLY slow service; I sat in the drive through for 25 minutes, no exaggeration, though they didn’t have many customers in front of me or on the patio. Then they took another few minutes just to tell me they didn’t have fry sauce. Food was cold too and the last four times I’ve eaten there, I have gotten crumbs for fries, as in, they’re all tiny pieces. Sadly, this place used to be great, but my visit today will be my last; I will NOT be back to Bug Bun.
Sad to see the changes. I graduated from the high school just down the road from the Big Bun. It was pretty much a daily lunch spot for my friends and I.Years later I left the Boise area for several other towns and states but have come back occasionally. Every time I came back one of the food places I made sure to stop at at least 2 or 3 times during the visit was the Big Bun. I only ever ordered one thing…their Finger Steak Sandwich. It was always the best ever!In fact on one trip back to Boise while I was living in Spokane I actually bought 10 pounds of their frozen finger steaks and carried them home on the air plane with me. I also had my mother bring me some when she flew up to see us about a year after that.THAT IS HOW GOOD THEY REALLY WERE FOLKS!The last time I was there was in 2008 and I am now back in the area for a couple of weeks. We went there this evening to have dinner and of course I noticed that there were many changes to the place. First thing was I couldn’t find the Finger Steak Sandwich on the meny so I asked the girl at the walk-up window and she really didn’t know what I was talking about. She had to ask someone else who tried to tell me it was now a chicken fried steak sandwich. WHAT!!! Oh but then she figured out it was their Cafferty Sandwich. Well never seeing it on the menu I just ordered 2 of them for my husband and myself. Now the sandwicn you used to get came on a toasted sesame bun with catsup and shreaded lettuce (which I always had held). There were lots of bite size beef pieces in the most heavenly flavored batter and oh so tender and flavorful. What we got was a bun – untoasted, 2 large pieces of for the most part tender meet dipped in what I believe was the same batter as the old owners used but I couldn’t tell. Now they put some type of runny mayo mixed with horseradish (yuck), large piece lettuce and a slice of tomato. What the heck! The tots I ordered weren’t that great either and were served with pre-packaged fry sauce instead of the good old home made stuff. The prices seems to be very high as well. The 2 sandwiches and one small tot were $17.00. I noticed the finger steak dinner is now $10.89. Wow…We will go back one more time and I will try another sandwich but I will order it with catsup only and see how it is then. I may even ask them to toast the bun. I hope the next one is more like the old one used to be. I know the place was owned by the same family for a very long time and understand things have to be sold. It is a real shame that the new owners had to go and mess with something that was a proven success. With all of the big national chains around it was always nice to patronize the local folks.
I havent tried the burgers yet, but the selection and taste of the ice cream is amazing.
I lived in Boise in the late 70’s and early eighties.Big Bun was the place.I come back and visit, usually once a year.I love this place and I know things have changed, but for me? It’s still the greatest.I enjoy coming here and the food is my favorite.I don’t eat much meat meat anymore, digestive stuff. But? when I come and go here? no issues..
The fish sandwich Is very good! It is a large portion of fish, lightly hand breaded, deep fried, and served on a quality bun with lettus and tarter.
Gross! I would rather eat at McDonald’s or make my own
I miss the old Big Bun. I used to eat at Big Bun drive in about once a week for twenty years and it was the best burger joint in town. Upon hearing that the place changed hands I had hoped that things would stay the same, but alas, they soon did not. The type bun, the quality of meat, and not being able to grill the onions the same way they did forever, is now a distant memory. After giving them several chances to prove me wrong,I quit going there, what a bummer. I wish the old owners would open up another place so I can get the same delicious burgers of days gone by, My favorite was the Hot Russian with grilled onions, RIP
