Dutch oven cafe lunch a bust. Have been there a few times. The old one was run by Tom, in a tiny place with pushed-close tables and walls covered with photos, Tom liked to make wisecracks and also made fun of you if you didn’t know about the limited menu. The moment you walked in the door your food was put on the grill to cook. No matter how many diners, service was fast and you felt as though it was prepared just for you. Dutch oven has moved a half a mile up the street and has a new owner but the same menu. Of course I had high expectations that the food would be as good and the atmosphere similar, but what I did not expect is to be ridiculed from the get go, then have to wait more than 30 minutes for a burger that was so dry, it was unpleasant. I cannot eat wheat, so was ridiculed when asked for no bun and again when I told them no cookie…. I believe the cook (owner I think) and wait staff need to learn the delicate art of the gentle tease and the necessary art of timing. Though the new place is nicely decorated and filled with light, I doubt that I will return to this place.

Its the perfect getaway from menus with 20 different options. Its a simple breakfast and lunch that’s been around for almost 80 years. The tables have red and white checker table clothes, everyone is excited to talk with you. I had the a wonderful conversation with one of the regulars about the man who owned the Dutch oven before he passed. This place is made to feel like you’re getting breakfast made at home. Yes you will get joked around with I you don’t finish your plate, or if you ask for cheese on your burger, or if you ask for a box. But it’s all in good humor. The staff is downright fun and it shows they love what they are doing there. It’s a wonderful place to go if you don’t want to make a decision, or are just looking for a place to drink coffee and meet new people.
Know what to expect before you go. Great place – my kind of place – fixed menu – fresh eggs, pancakes, fresh potatoes, fruit, coffee, you want meat or not? And good conversation – I hope you don’t decide to join us because no body will come here any more if it gets too crowded. :>)
It was fun.. Yes there are no menus, yes the drink comes with your lunch in a glass that should be reserved for juice, yes you get a cookie if you finish your lunch! I ate here just yesterday and it was just fine. $9 gets you a burger, cottage cheese and canned fruit a cookie and a drink. Some may find that a bit steep but the burger was huge and cooked perfectly and that staff ( one cook, one waitress and one bus boy) were attentive, but not overbearing. The restaurant was nice and clean and the patrons all seems very satisfied with what they were getting. If I was in the area I would definatly choose to eat here again, afterall sometimes it’s nice not to have to make a choice.
