I used to be a HUGE Shige’s fan, but after my experience today in the Meridian branch, I will never go here again. When we arrived at about 12:15, we sat down and there was the chef behind the counter doing his thing and he was friendly and great. I was disappointed by price change in fish, considering the $1 white plates were all primarily made up of faux shrimp, lettuce, cucumber, and rice (ie. the cheapest ingredients they have) and the $2 plates had a single piece of sushi with a small amount of fish in it, but we still tried to find things that looked good. The boats were not kept stocked, despite it being their lunch time. The chef disappeared from behind the bar at about 1 o clock and did not return for the rest of our duration, despite 95% of their boats being empty. I commented on this to the waitress, who did not even keep our water filled, and she told me she could get me a regular menu so that I could order something off of it and then proceeded to count our plates in front of us, despite me being clear that we were not done eating. I do not come to Shige’s to order a roll that costs $15 that would cost me $6 if we ate the same amount of food off of the boats. Me and my two dining partners felt bullied into leaving and that they were trying to force us to order something off of the menu. Sad thing is, when we normally come in here, we usually spend about $60 on boats alone and probably would have again if they hadn’t given us such poor service and practically pushed us out of the door. We all left hungry and dissatisfied, as did quite a few people around us.

I LOVE the sushi here however the service is HORRIBLE. My boyfriend and i are regulars and there is this one server who is always a total B****. Tonight when i asked for a refill on my glass that had been empty for 10 min (only three other people were dining at the time) she looked at me as though i had asked some daunting task. Every encounter I’ve ever had with this particular server has been so negative. However, the server with all the colorful pens is a sweet heart.

Awesome Sushi. I have now eaten sushi at a few places and by far Shiges is the best and this is coming from a person that is not a fish eater…After eating sushi a Sakana on Eagle tonight it really made me even more so appreciate Shiges very fresh sushi…..my boyfriend and I have eaten at Shiges numerous times and never had bad sushi yet…..Keep up the good work..

Sushi. My friend and I dine here often. We love the price (only $1 a plate!). For the people who are complaining about ingredient size, go somewhere else and pay $13 for 1 roll. We like the atmosphere and the customer service is great! Chefs always go out of their way, even during busy times. They ask what type of roll we would like and they’ll make it and put it on the boats. I think the boats are adorable! But you get what you pay for. I like the sushi but it’s not top notch quality, yet it’s still good. Overall I love this restaurant and will continue to be a patron.

3rd Time Is Not A Charm. I have been to Shige Express now three times – twice for lunch and once for dinner – and that was my last time. I am pretty forgiving for lunch because 5 small plates (usually 2 slices of sushi on each) is only $5 and it’s hard to complain about that. However, it seems that each time we went the fish inside the rolls kept getting smaller and the rice portion was getting larger. Rolls are very basic and every third roll will be a tempura roll and by dinner these should be skipped because they taste bitter from old oil. Service at lunch was o.k. but be warned about going during dinner rush. We encountered dirty tables, dirty sushi boats, rude servers and only 2 sushi chefs who refuse requests and were ‘put out’ when asked for an extra like eel sauce. Forget about ordering your own roll, first it takes forever and second it’s the same shabby roll they are putting on the boats.

Shame on Shige. I did like to see Shige opening a spot closer to me in Star, however, this is not Shige quality sushi. I do hope he gets a little better managerial control over this joint before someone who has never been down the 8th St. location thinks it is the same food as the Meridian location. The rolls they put out are smothered in mayonaisse, and I mean smothered to the point that everything tastes like mayonaisse, period. If you attempt to order anything directly made, both times I’ve been there, it is like pulling teeth. The majority of the rolls I saw being made were coming from the kitchen. Love Shiges downtown, and I do hope he puts a little more effort into this location, because unless it changes, I won’t be catering to it and will visit places closer which have proven to be much better sushi bars. I guess though, if you’re a born and raised Idahoan who loves fry sauce this place might be good to you.
