Traveling usually involves airports for me and when you travel in this manner, you are often forced to eat food at the airport. I say forced because, as we all know, the choices at airports are limited and the food is usually overpriced. Time is often limited, too, but if you find yourself in Chicago OHare airport in need of a meal that is better than fast food, a good choice is Americas Dog.I was on a recent trip to Cooperstown, New York in support of my beer blog Great Beer Now and had a short layover in Chicago. I didnt want fast food but I also had little time to spare. This is when Americas Dog caught my attention. There didnt seem to be many people waiting in line and I could tell there was no table service, so it seemed like a good place to stop for a quick bite to eat. This restaurant sells sandwiches, salads, wraps, and breakfast food and the name comes from the fact that they specialize in hot dogs and other elongated sandwiches representing different parts They serve choices like a New Orleans dog, Dallas Dog, Wisconsin Dog, and several others. Each is made using the meat and toppings that one would associate with that area- the Wisconsin option features bratwurst for example- for some added adventure when youre eating.Americas Dog has limited seating and may get crowded during busy times. There were maybe 10 people present when I visited and since I was in the mood for a burger, I decided to skip the dogs and go for one of the hamburger combos. My burger was made with beef patties topped with barbecue sauce, cheese, and an onion ring. It was quite meaty indeed and the lack of any vegetable toppings made it much like eating a barbecue meal. I found the fries pretty good too, easily better than those of most fast food. Speedy service is important when youre at an airport, but this is one area where Americas Dog lagged a little. I was here late in the day and it wasnt very crowded, yet they still took a while to prepare my food. No, I didnt miss my flight, but they do need to speed up the service. In fairness, though, they seemed understaffed when I was there- it appears the management let some of the staff leave early thinking it wouldnt get busy this late in the day, but it did.Airport food is a must when youre on the go and with the amount of travel I do for my blog, Great Beer Now, and for family travel, I must partake in the occasional airport meal. Americas Dog turned out to be a good choice for a reasonably quick meal and I like what I tasted. I will probably go for one of the dogs next time and there is a good chance I will be here again, as Chicago OHare is an airport I connect through on a regular basis. I did have some issues with service, but Americas Dog is a good choice when you dont have time for a meal in one of the sit- down, full service restaurants but want something better than the usual fast food. greatbeernow.com
