An oasis of calm and the pleasures of the table. In July, during layovers in a European trip, I had both lunch and dinner at Andiamo. A helpful policeman in terminal 5 advised me that the best sit-down meal to be found at the airport was the Hilton’s restaurant, so I set off–two suitcases and backpack–for terminal 2 and Andiamo. The lunchtime waitress, a charming, multilingual Bosnian, was helpful, attentive, and had a great sense of humor; likewise, the dinner waiter was attentive and very helpful since I had much less time. The insalata caprese, farro penne (a rare surprise), and cheese & fruit platter for lunch, and then the country-style soup served in a squat Mason jar (a whimsical touch) and salmon for dinner on my return were all well-prepared and delicious. My single disappointment was that their iced tea was an abomination out of a soda fountain–a jarring and unpleasant surprise for a restaurant of their caliber. The house Pino Grigio, however, was a mollifying alternative. I will gladly return to Andiamo on future layovers at Chicago O’Hare.
