A decent, slightly expensive option, and fun to sit outside during good weather. Menu is imaginative but limited and service is up and down. Good selection of beer and wine – I wish they had flight options to really get a taste of their offerings. Tap takeovers and wine tasting evenings keep things interesting. 50statesofwine.com

An Enjoyable Lunch. Downtown Downers Grove, Illinois, is gaining in charm and vitality each year. We’ve enjoyed many lunches at the fine restaurants up and down Main Street. We are happy to report of another fine restaurant, Cellar Door. The day was beautiful so we chose to sit outside. It was suggested that we think about the cheese and meat plate. We selected four delicious cheeses and three thinly sliced meats. It came with warm bread and crackers. There were walnuts and dried cherries to decorate the platter and tickle the palate. One of the cheeses, Explorateaur, a French Brie, was absolutely wonderful. My wife liked it so much she asked where she could buy some and was told the store in the next town stocked it. We also had prosciutto and some jambon de pays. It was all wonderful. Of course, we had to have a nice cheery wine. They recommended an Argentinian Chardonay. It was quite good, chilled to be refreshing without blocking the taste. In all it was delightful. The Cheese platter and the two glasses of wine without tip was $37.
