I have been to Portillo’s many times since I was a kid. I no longer live in Chicago, but I make a trip there at least once a year just to eat and watch a Cubs game. I usually always go to this specific Portillo’s because of the old-timey and historic atmosphere that I love. The walls are draped in local history with fun facts and of course, the Italian Beef sandwiches and dogs are some of the best in the country. The only drawback is, you will wait in line, especially at this location. But it is worth the wait.
El Jardin embodies everything that is right in this world. Albeit, it is a world where I make more money than I do now. Solid Mexican food, strong drinks (be warned, my friends), unpretentious service, and an awesome patio.Since I got a margarita, I wanted to pretend to be healthy so I ordered the veggie burrito. It was stuffed with beans, cauliflower, carrots, and broccoli. I dumped the spicy salsa on top, which wasn’t the brightest idea because my mouth was on fire. Not cute when you’re trying to look like you’re a grown up and have your shit together. I was catching up with an old friend and we spent a couple of hours sitting there. I didn’t even notice the servers, which is a good thing– they left us alone. Food was served hot and not too fast (or slow). I knocked a point off because it is more expensive then I was expecting. For 2 drinks and 2 burritos, our bill came to $52. But I will be back!
This place has the best margaritas in Chicago, hands down! I love their house margarita, but they have a great selection of specialty margaritas and mixed drinks as well. The two large patios almost guarantee you’ll get a spot outside, which is perfect for the busy summer nights in Lakeview. However, the food selection is pretty standard for Mexican places, nothing too special. The waiters are always very friendly and attentive, leading to a more pleasant experience. Unfortunately, they only accept two cards per check, which sometimes makes splitting the payment a pain. That would be the only change I would make to this restaurant. Otherwise – it’s the perfect spot to unwind and catch up with friends over margaritas.
A stout margarita. Worth a stop on your way to or from a Cubs game.
Servers and hosts treated us like 2nd class citizens and were unwilling to help us after dinner find a cab or any help getting home. Cocky, rude, and mediocre food (that is a generous comment). Avoid this place.
