Every Portillo’s is very much the same: same menus, same noise, same process, and same almost always very busy. And for good reasons: selections initially sound like pure Chicago fast food: hot dogs, polish sausage, Italian beef and sausage, burgers, fries onion rings, malts, milkshakes, soft drinks, etc. But there also are super surprises: ribs, amazing made-to-order salads, and much more… oh, and yes, fantastic chocolate cake and lemon cake. Always noisy, always seem too full to find a seat, but always a great place for special fast food.
Yummy pre-movie dinner. We decided to try The Peasantry before going to see a movie at the Landmark Century. We had an early family dinner and arrived when there was only one other table seated. The service was great and the staff very knowledgeable about the menu. We tried mussels, a salad, some entrees and sandwiches. All was very good with interesting flavors. I liked that portions were plenty but not enormous. Specials that stood out included an arugula salad with a blood orange dressing, a rabbit sandwich and a duck BLT with fried green tomatoes. The vegetarian plate was a good option for a lighter entree. Prices are reasonable for the quality. We’ll definitely return!
Creative and Spectacular!. My friend and I decided to give it a try after walking past on several occasions. The look is inviting and cozy. Our server may have been new so there were a few challenges. All of this was forgotten after the first bite. The burger with bone marrow, sounds a little gross and I actually felt dizzy when the waitress was talking about this burger. Despite the queasy feeling I ordered the burger along with the mussels and their version of grits. Hats off to the chef! You didn’t miss a beat on any of these dishes.
Great Food, Horrible Service. They screwed up our reservation and we had to wait an hour across the street at a bar. On top of that, the server wasn’t attentive and forgot a number of our drink orders. We tried the truffle fries, duck wings and the rabbit pasta. All of them we’re delicious and made me want to come back and try more despite the poor service.
Love this place. They took all of the best street vendor foods and took them to a high end gourmet level. Some very tasty combinations. Gyros are great.
