This place was a great find on my recent adventure. Chips and salsa came free with my entree which is kind of the expectation for most Mexican places. The menu had a ton of good things, but I decided to try my hand at a chicken burrito. This is a big portion for sure and probably could have fed two people, but I took a good chunk of it home. What I really enjoyed was the rice and beans, it was delicious here! There’s nothing I really enjoy more at a Mexican restaurant than simply dipping my chips into both of them like a dip. Really excellent job with the food here. If I were to nitpick anything, service was a bit slow, but gave me more time to snack on chips!
I visited El habanero on a business trip to chicago last week. Being from Utah, I am no stranger to great Mexican food and this place did the trick. It is extremely hard to find decent mexican food in the midwest, but El habanero does it right. Honestly the pork torta is probably one of the best I have ever had. The prices are also great for what you get, these tortas are huge. I would not recommend this place for a business meeting or fine dining. It was clean, but dated and completely lacking in ambiance. This and the fact their hot sauces are not great and the hottest is not hot by southwest or mexican standards is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. However this is the best mexican food I have found in Chicago, especially for the price.
