A quirky Michigan Ave. staple that can be a good experience, if the staff has had a good nights sleep. Weve enjoyed some great breakfasts, including awesome Eggs Benny and their Biscuits & Gravy or Chicken Fried Steak with Sausage Gravy. And youll find strong pours on the morning libations, including Frangelico shooters in black coffee.Table service is spot on with the senior members of the staff, if you dont mind overhearing them complain about the hungover and bleary-eyed college kids also waiting tables. You may have to flag someone down to top off your coffee, but they keep a fresh, strong pot brewing at all times. The kitchen crew can be very dramatic as theyre catching and plating orders – practically Oscar worthy, some mornings. So dont be shy – grab a front row seat at the small bar up front and listen to the banter. Remember, cash only. But theres an ATM machine up front.
I asked our tour guide where to find the best hot dogs in Chicago and he sent me here. I wasn’t disappointed. Great flavor dog and toppings or with garden. Also tried a chili cheese dog equally good. Wanted to try cheesesteak but was too full. Have to go back again.
When in Chicago, we were staying at Hotel Congress Plaza located in downtown. It had a fantastic location, right across from the Buckingham Fountain and a few steps further to the Michigan lakefront. So obviously the view was great! One afternoon, not knowing where to go eat, we aimlessly got out of the hotel and in 10 steps we stumbled across Artists Cafe. A very cute little diner, most people were enjoying their lunch outside owing to the good weather. Every table had their own (pink) beach umbrella for shade. Famished, we took our time and ordered: FalafelPita Medley Veggie BurgerBruschetta Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice Lemonade Chocolate Milkshake Everything arrived all at once. It was a table full of food. I had ordered for the Falafel Plate. It came with Falafel Bullets, pita bread, chunks of cheese, pickled olives, Hummus and Sour Cream + Jalapeno dips and salad. I absolutely loved this. It was cracker. Apart from the pickled olives which were too sour when eaten in isolation, but pretty good when eaten altogether, I finished everything on my plate! Pita Medley was quite similar to my dish, except it had no bullets and more kinds of pita. This was rather enjoyed as well. The Veggie Burger (Jain infact) looked pretty good. It came between toasted breads instead of burger buns and came with rice on the side. This was pretty yummy too! For the table, we called for Bruschetta. This was overloaded with cheese. The only two flavours that we’re coming forth were tomato and cheese. I wasn’t wowed by this dish. But all other dishes were on point. The Orange Juice and Lemonade were both refreshing and were half over before our food arrived. The chocolate milkshake was also pretty good. It wasn’t thick like a lot of other shakes, but it tasted good and full of chocolate. Food & Drinks – 4/5Service – 4/5Ambiance – 3.5/5Value for Money – 4/5Artists Cafe was a good pick for lunch. A beautiful afternoon spent with some really good food.
