A group of lady friends and I love to get together once or twice a year for afternoon tea. We have gone around to most places in Chicago for afternoon tea and we are always in the look out for a new place. This time around, we went for the upside down tea party at The Commons Club at Virgin Hotel. Not sure what upside down tea party meant but it wasn’t as the regular afternoon tea would be. There was no little strainer that fits on your tea cup. There was no finger sandwiches. There was no scones or clotted cream or lemon curd. There was tea and there were cookies. You had to order your tea separately and you could order a portion of assorted cookies for $10. They had matcha green tea cookies, short bread, oatmeal raisins, macaroons, and some powdered sugar covered cookies. One order could feed about four people and $10 for it was dirt cheap. This was hands down the cheapest afternoon tea we have ever paid. Well, of course also because we hardly got anything to eat. We ordered a couple sandwiches from their lunch menu and they were nice enough to cut the sandwiches into finger sandwiches size to accommodate us. The lunch menu was pretty limited though. We were hoping to order more appetizers but there were none. They also offered several selection of boozy teas which were cool. These were tea cocktails. If you want traditional afternoon tea, I suggest go elsewhere – Peninsula, Drake, Langham, Soho House. You may be more satisfied. However, the space was cool, and the staff were super friendly. Our waitress, though she was a little forgetful, was darling. All in all, we had a good time drinking tea and eating light snacks and cookies.
Last night I ate at The Commons Club in Virgin Hotels Chicago and had an incredible experience. My favorite dish was the Lobster Flatbread with Maine lobster, caviar creme fraiche and arugula. It was just incredible! Other dishes that stood out were the spicy crab claws and the Oscar style bison. My ONLY criticism is that quite a few of the dishes were very spicy and could have been a little less so, in my opinion. I can’t wait to go back here!
This is a nice place for a drinks and conversation. Not too loud not too crowded and a great drink selection. It is located on the second floor of the Virgin Hotel. I would go back.
