Rambling around the Loop, that downtown part of Chicago that is most assuredly not the place I would normally go for good food, I stumbled upon Crepe Bistro. Claiming itself as a French restaurant, this place almost instantly transported me not to France, but to Russia. It is owned by the Russians, I have come to find out from my Russian speaking server. In fact, what this place really seems to be is a Russian emigres idea of a French creperie. As the name conveys, crepes are on the menu here. But these are not frilly, lacy French crepes. These are blini (Russian version of crepes) as plump as the shoulders of a merchants daughter, immortalized by Anton Chekhov in his short story called On Mortality. The menu here is long, there are crepes for every palate. Want yours with creme fraiche and jewel-like red salmon caviar? Khachapuri-style stuffed with feta? Sweet, with Nutella and strawberries? Just name your pleasure. On my spontaneous visit, all the crepes were delicious. Among non-crepe items, a simple side of pan-fried potatoes with mushrooms, garlic and dill fired on all cylinders. And the perfect, ice cold martinis didnt hurt, either. These were made Russian-style, with a generous pour. Fish bowl sized glasses of perfection will set you back a mere $6, which is the best deal around, trust me. Of course, vodka is the name of the game here. After all, you are in the ersatz world of Russian emigration. Vodka comes in many varieties, even in a set of flights, should you be inclined to partake of it as the Russians do: ice cold and unadorned. This time of year I get nostalgic for that country of my childhood long past, the one that no longer really even exists. It only remains in my memories. This place brought my nostalgia to the surface and fed it with blini, vodka, caviar and shabby chic decor. French tunes crooned in the background, as all around me I heard my first language, long since foreign to my ear. Crepe Bistro is the place I will go again and again for a perfect vodka martini, caviar crepes and a healthy dose of nostalgia. What other Old World combination can be so bittersweet and delicious?

Perfect. This tiny little place in this unexpected location greatly exceeded my expectations. Loved the comfy and relaxed feel… Everything I ate tasted exactly like I wanted, its like they read my mind. Will absolutely be back again and again.

Love it. We’ve been there twice and will definitely go again. We love the crepes and the wide variety. Location is perfect for theater goers – just around the corner from the Cadillac Palace and not far from the Goodman or Ford Oriental. Also, cheap martinis, if you care for them.
