Great place to drink
Always Worth a Visit. Let’s be clear about what this place is and what it isn’t. It isn’t clean. It isn’t staffed by chefs who went to cooking school in France. It isn’t expensive. And it isn’t closed very many hours a day.The South Loop Club is a Chicago institution. It’s been around since at least 1986, when it appeared in a couple of scenes in the movie Running Scared, starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. I suspect that the building that houses SLC hasn’t been painted or otherwise significantly improved since then. The building was formerly known as the 7th Street Hotel, until 7th Street was renamed Balbo Avenue in 1933.History aside, South Loop Club is a great place to get good food late at night. I’ve had their gyros sandwiches, cheeseburgers, and fries, all of which were very tasty. There’s something cool about getting fresh cooked food at 3:30 in the morning in a place that’s just seedy enough to make you feel slick, but not so seedy that you don’t feel safe.During our many trips to SLC in the wee small hours, my best friend Austin and I have seen what I suspect were–as Hank Hill put it–women of easy virtue, plus drug dealers and various other ruffians, but everyone is always on his or her best behavior.If you’re in Chicago and find yourself jonesing for a deep-fried fish sandwich between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m., this is the place to go. You shan’t be disappointed.
Great For When It’s Late. My friend and I almost always stop here when we come to Chicago. Great Gyros and Burgers. I’ve heard that the sit-down service isn’t the greatest, but the little carry-out portion of the place is a real treat. I feel like I’m in a gangster movie every time I go there. That’s pretty cool if you ask me.You’ve got to give it a shot, but leave your gun at home.
