(This review is for their pop-up cart at the grand opening for the Forum55 Food Hall in the Loop.)In a word: bland.I know these Cuban-style tamales are supposed to be different from their Mexican counterparts, but I found the masa to be far too dense, somewhat flavorless and almost completely void of any protein – I was three quarters the way through my first Buffalo Chicken tamale before I found anything that resembled chicken. And there was none of the promised heat from simmering in Frank’s Red Sauce, just the overwhelming tang of their homemade blue cheese topping. Thankfully, the cumin-spiced black beans and smoky elote corn brought some flavor to the $13 combo plate. The pork for the Slow Roasted Cuban Pork was also a no-show in my co-worker’s tamale – just the smallest of shreds embedded in the thick masa. But we both really enjoyed the flavorful sauce, complete with olives, capers, (and maybe some sweetness from raisins).
I adore this place. My husband and I get takeout from here once every two weeks, at least. Here are some things you should know: there are only 4 window seats inside and nothing else, so it’s best suited for takeout. In the warmer months, they have a fantastic patio that just opened late summer 2015. The patio area is BYOB. Finally, these aren’t authentic tamales. They mix the filling into the masa so every bite is consistent. I’ve heard that some people are turned off by this, but we love it. They make all their salsas and hot sauces in house and they are delicious (and spicy)! Personal favorite tamales are: spicy black bean and corn with salsa Verde, atomic pork, Thai coconut curry. They also make the best guacamole I’ve ever tasted, and serve it with plantain chips. I love you, Dia de los Tamales!
