Just because it’s Authentic doesn’t make it the best. Good Authentic Mexican FoodThe place is like stepping into mexico. From the smells in the attached grocery to the music overhead, it feels like the front door is a border into mexico. (except they understand English a little better). It doesn’t get much cheaper for food. Taco Fridays you can get 3 tacos, a Mexican coke, and all the chips and salsa you can eat for $7.50 including tip. The place is a dive and should be expected as such. However, we still eat there every Friday for lunch.

Good Price Great Food. I ate here for the first time yesterday. I had never heard of the place until I was searching Mexican restaurants and decided to give it a try. For under $7 I got a carnitas taco meal with 3 tacos and beans and rice. They are the best carnitas I have had in the QC and I love carnitas. It is a little hole in the wall place, but totally worth it. The service is quick and polite.

Best Mexican food in the area hands down. Best carnitas without a doubt too. Handmade corn tortillas. Really good sopes. Try the chili negro or the salsa roja. One of the only places to get pozole in Thr area and they do it very well. Only complaint was that if ordered any other day than Sunday it comes with shredded lettuce which you do not want to add. On Sunday for some really odd reason they have shredded cabbage which is how if should come. Carne de res is vert good too. They even give a Fred bowl of fideo when you sit down in addition to 3 salsas and chips. Cheapest guacamole in town and best too. Grab some chili-lime dried mangos next door in the store for the road.

Authentic, Delicious, Cheap. An Hispanic person in the area told me that El Mexicano was his favorite Mexican restaurant because it reminded him of his mother’s home cooking. That was all I needed to try it out on my quest to find my favorite Mexican food in the Quad Cities. My friend’s favorite Mexican food is carnitas (pork tacos), so she tries them at every Mexican restaurant we visit (and we’ve been to many in the Quad Cities). These were her favorite. The waitress gave her the option of getting the meat just by itself or also having it mixed with pork fat–the traditional way. I ordered the largas dinner, which included two largas, beans and rice. Largas are essentially large tostadas but instead of fried tortillas they feature unfried thick homemade flour tortillas, refried beans, meat (optional), lettuce and Mexican cheese. I chose steak (asada) and seasoned pork (al pastor) for my meat toppings. I favored the pork, but both were delicious. Our meals were just $6 each, portion sizes were generous, and each order comes with a free cup of noodle soup. The food arrived quickly, too. El Mexicano offers a very relaxed atmosphere and features a big screen television where you can watch Spanish-language TV while you eat. So far, El Mexicano and Maria’s are my two favorite Mexican restaurants in the Quad Cities. Salud!
