Ate Al’s Beef for the first time last week, and I hate to say I was slightly let-down feeling after it all. I ordered the big beef combo and added cheese sauce to the fries. This ended up costing over 16 dollars despite the fact I could have (and have) ordered an almost identical meal for less at Portillos. The fries were as greasy as you would expect and the cheese sauce was indeed a melted cup of american cheese. The Big beef was good but lacked that savory melt-in-your mouth goodness of other top Italian beefs and the hot peppers were just so so.
Mushy meat, crushed red pepper from Pizza Hut?. Sorry Al’s crew, you got this one wrong. I would like Al’s beef Combo better if: The meat were not sliced so thin it turned into mush, the gravy if it didn’t have so much crushed red pepper in it (that’s cheating because it comes from a bottle,) and the giardiniera if it had some variety of flavor. But, that being said, if I had no other options I would definitely eat Al’s, because I like to do the Combo…Combo Italiano.
Dissatisfied. Today September 28,2014.Was very Excited about getting a Al’s Beef Italian Sandwich. Hardly no beef. Not dipped like I asked and Burned up wrinkled re cooked fries. This was the Second time that has happened. I have referred many of friends and Family for years. The Quality of beef is not the same and the Sandwich is very dry. Please step up your business and get better cooks.
Great sandwich. On my last visit to Chicago, Al’s was first on my list. I had to try the iconic sandwich. I had it lightly dipped with spicy peppers, and it was fantastic. Definitely worthy of its high status. The fries were tasty as well. If I had the time, I would have eaten two.
Interesting…. Grade: B-/C+Having heard so much about the Italian beef sandwich, we had to seize the opportunity to stop at Al’s. The beef is definitely tender and juicy, but the pungent flavor of star anise in the juice in which it is cooked is very reminiscent of Vietnamese pho more than anything Italian I’ve ever had. Unfortunately, the taste was almost overpowering. Not having had any of its competitors, I don’t know if this effect is the standard or not.
You just can’t get a tasty beef sandwich like this any where else but Chicago. Loved it. Staff is friendly and the food is awesome.
