Go for the view…stay for the carrot cake.. Sunday brunch has jumped to a whopping $68.00, as of our most recent visit and a 20% gratuity was automatically added. Arriving too late in the buffet service for the stuffed French toast, our options for breakfast items were the chef-prepared omelet (with ham, sausage, bacon, mixed cheese and assorted diced veggies) and a chafing dish of pre-made eggs Benedict. We opted to start at the chilled seafood bar. While I never saw the assorted smoked fish promised on the brunch menu, we did sample the oysters on the half shell, jumbo chilled shrimp and some very nicely-prepared stone crab claws. All were presented on ice, following a proper steaming/boiling yes, perfectly cooked! On the second visit, the brine-less oysters had been thoroughly picked over, so there werent any worth sampling after the first pass.Cocktails arrived shortly after we began an $11 Bloody Mary (solid pour, spicy and maybe 10 ounces, topped with a skewered rock-hard disk of carrot, a brown nib of celery and a half-slice of undercooked bacon), along with a large glass of the waiter-recommended white wine, at $17.Moving down the service line, the cheese selection was simply cubes of milky Swiss and aged cheddar, but did feature two rather nice chucks of perfectly moldy, and very flavorful, blue cheese. A smattering of crackers and crusty bread was available, along with several types of sliced sandwich breads and bagels for toasting.Over to the entrees, the bright orange salmon was succulent and lovely, perfectly steamed in a buttery, but light tasting, caper-filled sauce. The prime rib, however, was absolutely tasteless, with little-to-no seasoning on the meat at all – even the jarred horseradish cream sauce, or apple compote, couldnt inspire flavor from the gray flesh. The Amish chicken, an herb-roasted, oversized rock hen, was tender and juicy. Sadly, and despite being featured on the menu, there was no leg of lamb left for us during our seating – so, plan accordingly if youre visiting during their 10am to 3pm buffet. We both picked through the side dishes that included a cauldron of gooey, brown over-whipped potatoes, a rather tasty, stock-hearty summer vegetable risotto with snap-fresh carrots and peas, and a zucchini/squash medley. Desserts included a mixed bowl of fresh strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, as well as small spoons of bite-sized petit fours, miniature crme brle and a super sweet cheesecake ruined by canned strawberry topping. The carrot cake stole the show light, moist and not too sweet.Oh, and the view! Well, there was none on this particular visit. Fog had socked in the lakefront and we couldnt even see to the edge of the building. That said, weve dined there before and the scenery is stunning.
New Chef?. Wanted to check out the place after the hoopla of the Food Network show hunting for a new executive chef. Unfortunately, his visa is still in process from France and he is not in residence yet. They are hoping for January. Food ok, but menu tired. But what a view! They could serve greasy sliders and mac/cheese and fill the place up. Simon M. was fantastic and we loved talking with him. We will go back after the new chef is in place and settled in.
The view is beautiful..Amazing especially at dusk..The food wasn’t what I expected!
Do not eat at Cite’ during the month of May if the weather is hot, they do not turn the air conditioning on until the end of May beginning of June. We ate there last night and it was unbelievably HOT!! The food was nice nothing special BUT the view was great. We got to see a lightening show out over the water.
Horrible Food on Top of a Building. DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!!!!Everything was horrible about this restaurant. Servers were ingnorant about food and wine. The kitchen sent entrees out before appitizers. The food was prepared so horribly bad. The chef should be shot for his recipe choices. The cooks should be shot with him for their sub-par preparation of the food chef chose to cook. Take some McDonalds to the top of the Sears Tower. You will feel a lot better than spending hundreds of dollars on French style Ruby Tuesday’s food.
Overpriced and Two-star Quality. Just finished Easter Brunch at Cite. The food is about as good as I would expect for a $25 buffet. We were asked if we wanted a Bellini to start. We learned later it was not included. For a $68 brunch (per person) I would expect at least one glass of cheap champaign. So another $28 was added to the bill for two drinks. The Bellini’s were not very good either. The place was overheated at about 80 degrees (due to the sun) but, come on … this must not be the first time brunch has been served on a sunny Chicago day. The hosts and wait staff was about a 2-star quality. ‘How is it guys?’ is not a sign of fine dining. Then to top it off … a 20% gratuity was included. At a buffet? With only two people at the table? And I had to take the silverware at the next table as they did not replenish mine after taking my plate. The view was nice … but no better than the Hancock or Sears Tower. The ‘no jeans’ policy did not apply … seems they will let anyone in. Do not believe the good reviews … I think they are planted by the owner.
