Best meal we’ve eaten this trip. We’ve been in the US for two weeks and Emilio’s is the best restaurant we have been to. And that’s saying something! The food was great, and decently sized dishes were served to feed 4 people happily. The prices are more than reasonable and the service was great. And dessert was amazing too. The presentation was to a tee, and the taste even better. I’d go back in a heartbeat and would highly recommend going here when in Chicago! Traditional, Spanish tapas. Yum!!
Food was ok. The mussels and shrimp in the paella were way overcooked. I have eaten at the Purple Pig on Michigan ave. Much better menu, drinks, and atmosphere
Wonderful Spanish Classics. Emilio’s delivers on Spanish classics. I had the Tortilla Espaola con Ensalada and the Tabla de la Casa. The tortilla was so flavorful, bringing out all the flavors in a perfect slice paired with a simple greens salad with oil and vinegar and three perfect olives. The Tabla included Ham Serrano, Chorizo, dried pork tenderloin, creamy (not musky) goat cheese, and toast points. Everything reminded me of the simple food my host mother served me in Len and the patio was a perfect place to enjoy the light dinner. The White Sangria was simple but refreshing and the service was polite and friendly. My food was $20 and the drink about $9. I was delighted to find such a quiet, authentic oasis just two blocks from Michigan Avenue; it made my night.
Great Food, Great Prices. My girlfriends and I ate here during a weekend trip to the city. There were 6 of us. We split several tapas plates, ordered two carafes of sangria, and had three kinds of dessert.Between all of us the evenly split bill was less than $40pp. The food was phenomenal, the prices were unbelievable. We WALKED from our hotel on Michigan Avenue. The ambiance was so-so. A lot of booths around the edges of the room and a very open / bright dining room. While I wasn’t impressed by the dining area, I wasn’t turned off either. It was just average. Which is ok considering the extensive quality of the food and the price that we paid.
Authentic Spanish Cusine. I stopped here for a quick bite before heading out of town and took advantage of the Tapas Happy Hour(s) at the bar here. My mom and I shared a pitcher of Red Sangria and split the 5 small plates for $8.95 deal. The plates are small, but I think that is well advertised and they are priced for the size. In true Spanish fashion, we were served a complimentary dish while we enjoyed our Sangria – a very authentic and tasty ensalada rusa. It really reminded me of the version that is served in Madrid when you order a little cold beer. Service was friendly and our tapas were great – and you’ll rarely hear me complain about Sangria, but this was an exceptionally generous pitcher (ice and fruit in the glasses, pitcher full of wine)! Being so centrally located off of Michigan Ave, I did have a concern when my mom suggested the place that it would be expensive and touristy, but we found it the opposite. We will definitely be back on our next trip!
Permanently closed Unique find…. We walked in for a quick meal and ended up rather surprised by the offerings from the nightly specials menu, despite a rocky start – the bread they brought to the table was stale and the butter was rock-hard frozen We ordered a red and white sangria for each of us – very refreshing! After ordering the gazpacho soups sampler trio (salsa, watermelon and cucumber, yum!) the wife had a pan-fried soft shell crab ($9) that was a tad on the small side, but was amazingly prepared and seasoned. I enjoyed the Solomilo con Pimientos featuring perfectly-grilled, medium rare beef tenderloins rolled in cracked pepper with sauted onions, sweet peppers and a sherry sauce – just spectacular. Service was attentive, but not hovering. We hope to go back and try the paella platter, but at $20 a person, it better be damned impressive.
Overpriced, bite sized plates. $18 paella per person!. I will say, first of all, that Emilio’s has a nice atmosphere and a great wait staff. The food is good, but incredibly small in portion size. We were a party of three and ordered four tapas and a pitcher of sangria. The dishes that came out were served on saucer plates, more or less, and were at least $10 a plate. The gambas (shrimp) a la plancha could not have been any smaller. We were only given 5 shrimp and they were barely nickel sized. The other tapas dishes were similarly small, and the pitcher of sangria was $25. Also, paella is $18 per person, whereas with other tapas places that will buy one large dish to share. For 3 people who left very unsatisfied and still with empty stomachs, the $70 bill (excluding tip) was not a welcomed gift. Unless you’re willing to spend upwards of $100 for 2 people to leave with full stomachs, go elsewhere. Try Cafe Iberico. Better food, bigger portions, less expensive.
