The quality of local options are great. Had the fried rainbow trout and chips. Outstanding batter that is light, flavorful yet doesn’t just clump to the meat. Homemade vinegar for the chips was awesome. Great local beer selection and atmosphere is antique but cool.

An Ode to Fried Cheese Curds. I am a Chicago transplant. I grew up in Maine, a place where cheese isnt fried and no one knows what a cheese curd is. The word curd bothers me. It isnt appealing. It doesnt sound like something I want to eat. For that reason, I lived in Chicago just a stones throw from Wisconsin, the land of the cheese heads for a few years before I even tried a cheese curd. Now I order them all the time. The best fried cheese curds I have had in Chicago are from Farmhouse and Antique Taco, and they couldnt be more different. The first time I ever tried fried cheese curds was at my favorite neighborhood restaurant, Farmhouse. The waiter suggested them, and one thing to know about Farmhouse is that you always trust the waitstaff; they are seriously the best in the city. I thought that fried cheese would be really greasy, and I was wrong. The fried cheese curds at Farmhouse are very lightly battered and lightly fried. They are satisfyingly crisp on the outside, and warm and melted on the inside. It is a delightful combination of textures. Farmhouses Fried Cheese Curds are simple but well executed. They come with two house made sauces: a catsup (that puts Heinz to shame) and a spicy curd sauce. Fried cheese curds taste best when paired with beer, and Farmhouse has an impressive selection. A cold beer and hot fried cheese curds are the ultimate way to enjoy happy hour. I have made the mistake of ordering fried cheese curds at other restaurants, and have been disappointed. Farmhouse make the best fried cheese curds around. End of story. For me, when it comes to traditional fried cheese curds the only ones I want are Farmhouses.Farmhouse is located at 228 West Chicago Avenue, in Chicagos River North. It is just beside the Chicago Brown line stop. thekittchen.com

I was disappointed when we first entered this restaurant. The seating was not that comfortable and the menu was very small. But, I was really happy by the time we left. I had the pork chop with rhubarb. It was one of the most delicious things I have eaten on years. I also had two cocktails, the swing and Stacey’ s apiary. Both were fum, unusual and delicious.

All around a winner. Solid service, friendly and attentive. Food was excellent, very fresh and good flavor combinations. A great place to visit again.
