We were enjoying the friday night Chicago downtown life and indian cuisine was never on our mind.. After hopping multiple restrobars… We came to Vermilion and thought lets give it a try! It was worth it.. Loved the Pani puri margarita and quircky presentation of food in tiffin boxes.. I ordered the prawn curry and felt like ordering it time and again!! It was Indian food re-defined .. Hope to go back there again!!
Vermillion was my discovery of the last trip to Chicago. I was looking for an Indian restaurant – to entertain my guests and then I chanced upon Vermillion. The reviews seemed very encouraging – so I went there – a bit trepidatiously. And, what a surprise it was.Located in Hubbard Street, at the street level – the restaurant has a good clan ambience. In the evening with the lights it takes on a nice hue. Pure white tablecloths – beautifully laid out, give an inviting impression.Started by a very talented Bengali lady – who now lives in Chicago, Vermillion is an expression of passion, style and warmth of Indian hospitality – blended with efficiency. A truly inspiring menu – which is a fusion of Latin and Indian cuisine. What is amazing is how the spices and tastes have been combined, with a great deal of attention to presentation in every dish. Indian cuisine is climbing high on style and presentation.I went to the restaurant twice in close succession and both the meals – for my guests and myself – were a true epicurean experience. We were guided by the Maitre’D and we ordered some of the signature dishes – the lamb shank, the prawns prepared with a combination of Latin and Indian style, a delicious chaat preparation as starters and some great shahi tukra and kulfi as desserts. My guests who were Americans – were also very impressed with the food.On the second day – I met the lady who owns the restaurant. She seemed completely passionate and involved with the place. She had advised that they were opening a branch in NY as well. This is one restaurant – I would definitely recommend. Upscale, Stylish but real good food!Cost : USD 100-120 for two persons.
We came here for lunch with a group of co-workers and were the only people in the place. We ordered quite a few appetizers and entrees to share, and while the food was good, I don’t think it lived up to the expectation of Vermilion. Notable were my LSD (Lake Shore Drive) cocktail with a chartreuse eye dropped, the daal, the scallops with pumpkin and the butter chicken. The rest was good, but not anything amazing. The desserts were also good and complimentary, as we experienced so lags in service due to an unexpected second table for the lunch hour. Overall, the service was good and the waiter/manager definitely did what they could to keep us informed of the delays but it was almost a 2 hour lunch.
Came here for a team lunch recently and quite frankly it was kind of a disappointment. Vermillion is Indian/Mexican fusion however most dishes were just one or the other and honestly this place is quite confused about what it wants to be. The space is beautifully designed and open, but there’s nothing that really drives me to return. Our server although pleasant and apologetic for being the only one on the floor during the day for two large tables, was not equipped to get us in and our for lunch within a reasonable time. Quite honesty, I don’t know why they are even open for lunch and if I were to return it would definitely be for dinner. The mango lassi I ordered was the first I have ever had and for the first one, it was a delight! Super fresh tasting, creamy and earthy with the freshness of the mint. The scallops were great. The pani puri was way to sweet for my taste. The Vindaloo duck was balanced with the heat and sweetness of the mango salsa. The calamari was well prepared. And overall some of the other dishes we had weren’t that memorable.Desserts came complimentary with how delayed our service was and actually were the best part of the meal:) northandred.com
When in Rome- Ordered a Kingfisher, not as malty as you find in India, might be good it travels. We got a chef’s creation!! Woooo! Yuca with pico de Gallo, yogurt and lentils. Very good. Great treat! Seemed very balanced. Vindaloo duck. Amazing. Wonderfully spicey. The heat was just right and balanced with the mango pico. Pani Puri. Potato, month water, rojo jicama. You pour the water into the potato and then eat it! Less earthy – sweeter. I really liked it but the table wanted a saltier, earthy taste. Octopus: grilled Peruvian pulpo with a traditional tiradito sauce. Great heat to this. Really liked it. Scallops were great! I really like them. Not all of us agreed. Vermilion Thali: daal makhani, naan, raita, papad… Wonderful meal overall. My teammates are too picky. : ). Avantika Daing Malhotra Meghan Phillipp Valerie Mirza
Wonderful concept and decor, but the menu is RARELY if ever changed and the same old offerings become stale. The creativity is definitely there, with stunners like the Pani Puri margarita stealing the show at the dinner table. Inventive cocktails that truly merge similar flavors from South Asian and South American kitchens. However, the same offerings year after year has me never wanting to come back to this place.Butter chicken is so-so, and might give an Indian food newbie the wrong idea about Indian cuisine. The whole fish was fantastic when I had it, and I definitely love the desserts. bigcityblonde.com
Thoroughly disappointing. I have to say that in Chicago, we never had bad service or a bad meal.. until we went to Vermilion. Up until that point, we had only experienced friendly hosts, great food, knowledgeable and speedy servers, and professional, charismatic management. When we walked into Vermilion, we were met with a sullen faced host/manager who seemed disinterested in speaking with, or engaging us, in any positive way. While our server seemed quite knowledgeable and friendly at first, her service, and the overall quality of our night, deteriorated quickly.Appetizers may have been the only good thing about this place, but even then, this is largely a relative thing as everything else was so bad. Drinks took a long time (~10-15 mins) and quality checks were sparse. The food runners auctioned off our orders (Denny’s style) and actually came to our table 2 times with the wrong food. The tandoori steak was bad, just bad; to say it was bland does not even scratch the surface. The prawn curry dish I ordered was mediocre and served with rice that had sour, mushy patches in it. As soon as we were done eating, even though it was apparent that we were in the mood to keep drinking (half of us had full drinks), the server inexplicably came out of nowhere and attempted to have us clear up! She would also ask us questions and leave before we had answered. I am typically quite sympathetic with servers (having been in the industry for many years), but this was truly bad form.I was warned by a local that Vermilion was not the best option, I wish we had listened. I truly regret that this was one of our dining experiences when there were so many other great options in Chicago.
