Amazing. Never had a bad item here. The food is fantastic. It’s often traditional, but also sometimes surprisingly inventive at the same time. And a decent wine selection doesn’t hurt.
Fantastic food, disappointing service and hospitality. I love the creativity of their menu but was put off by their lack of caring. The first time we went they were paranoid about us vacating our table at a specific time. The second time we went with another couple, ordered drinks and desserts with our food, and we were asked to LEAVE after 2 hours. Unfortunately the hair we found in our asparagus wasn’t even offered to be comped until we had to specifically request it. Sigh. Too bad they treat customers so poorly.
Good Tapas. Maybe I’m just lucky, but I’ve only been to good tapas places in Chicago and this just makes that list longer. We didn’t order anything tricky, just some of the staples like spicy potatoes, scallops, stuffed mushroom tops, baked goat cheese and a very good meat dish that was served over potatoes and onions. Since the dinner was so good we had to order dessert, and we went with the caramelized banana with ice cream and chocolate sauce. Wow that was good. I didn’t know this place existed (I don’t make it to the burbs that often), but if you are in the neighborhood, check it out.
The North Shore could use more. The North Shore has all the pizza, sushi and steak it could ever need, which is one reason Tapas Gitana is such a great alternative for a night out–which is to say, while the food is extraordinary, one of the best things about Tapas Gitana is that it is not the same old stuff you can find anywhere in the ‘burbs. The food itself is not the same old tapas you’ll find in many of the more well-known tapas places in Chicago. You’ll find pincho de pollo (chicken skewers) on the menu, but enlivened by the inclusion of a delectable tidbit of Spanish chorizo. Patatas bravas are there, too, but here they’re served as crisp potatoes topped with a spicy, creamy paprika-infused aioli rather than as a plate of mushy fries tossed with hot sauce. The Tapas Gitanas versions of these old stand-bys are better, much better.The interior is admittedly a little noisy, a trait shared by many of my favorite tapas places. The wine list, which I’ve seen praised elsewhere, seemed a little thin, frankly, but since we prefer to order by the glass (and not by the bottle) we’ve grown used to this here and elsewhere.One last thing, the patio is an ideal place to fritter away balmy summer evening, yet another feature the North Shore could use more of.
I’ve been coming here for years and have never had a bad dish. The tapas are mostly traditional with some surprising and excellent originals. The paella is very good and the wine and sherry selection is great. All that outside under an umbrella on a summer evening?you couldn’t ask for better…
