The regular burritos here are the size of an infant – the ground beef-filled offering was a solid half pound of spicy seasoned ground beef, tucked into a large tortilla with wilted lettuce, a spoonful of tomatoes and a squirt of creama. My Combo #3 was a tender pork-filled tamale, a greasy enchilada topped with sliced cheese and a gooey, cheese-filled quesadilla. There was a nice little nest of bagged tortilla chips, a dollop of spicy guacamole, a nice smear of cheese-topped refried beans and cold, dry rice – all for less than $9.00. Sadly, my chili relleno was ready and plated far earlier than the rest of the freshly-prepared meal, and the guy at the grill opted to reheat my perfectly fried pepper on the flat-top, pressing it down so flat it was almost unrecognizable. A three-star vote for authenticity and price, but the whole meal felt a bit greasy.

A gem near Woodfield Mall. It seems that most places in the ‘burbs that claim to serve Mexican food actually serve Tex-Mex. Pancho’s is a nice exception. A small, storefront.location just west on Golf Rd. a couple miles from Woodfield Mall, this is worth the drive. It has a healthy selection of tacos, tortas, burritos and much more. It’s always fresh and made with care. There are two things I always look for in a taqueria like this: lengua tacos and horchata. They have ’em and they are good. They also have complimentary fire-roasted jalapeos, a nice perk. They do a lot of take-out business too. A go-to place.
