If your mom has an appetite for the spicier things in life, bring her in to Libertad in Skokie. Libertad stands on a tired and dreary street in Skokie. Yet the flavor experience inside this first and only Latin dining spot in the city is quite the opposite. Chef Armando Gonzalez, Chef Marcos Rivera and co-owner and designer J. Omar Magana have created a Latin restaurant experience that leaves the diner with full bellies and happy chorizo filled thoughts. Chef Armando Gonzalez has honed his skills while working in many of the top restaurants throughout the city and developed his true Latin flavors by peeling potatoes by his mothers side as a child while growing up in Mexico. The restaurant experience is typically known for their small plates, however their brunches prove to be anything but small. One of the favorite dishes is a simple breakfast burrito that puts all other burritos to shame filled with avocado, crme fraiche and bacon it will have your taste buds doing summersaults. If you get blessed with a warm May day, couple your plate with a warm mug of coffee or a signature drink and enjoy the fiesta on their quant outside patio. girlandthekitchen.com
El Rippo Half A Meal. We enjoyed the atmosphere. Our server, nice but detached. The menu selection is limited to about five items per category. The food presentation was good. However, the menu at the top left in very fine print suggests to order two meals per person or if you are a couple, to order at least three items. We confirmed this with the server who stated the portions are not large and one plate would not satisfy. The big turn-off was the price verses the portion size. This is not tappas nor is it a standard restaurant concept, but somewhere in between. I’m not fan of oversized portions, but I do want a meal and I do not want to leave hungry. We ordered three of the five fish courses. The scallops and salmon a delight. The lemon sole looked good but tasted bland, nothing stood out, I would give this restaurant one star out of five, I feel it is overpriced. I can find other small restaurants which have just as good food if not better, but can offer a more satisfing dining experience overall.
If you want to eat indoors, CALL FOR RESERVATIONS. Even though the dining room was empty when we arrived at 5:30 we were told it was reserved for those with reservations. We ate on the patio but it was too cool to be comfortable. When we left the dining room was half-empty. The food is very good but a bit over-priced. As a couple we paid over $90 for four small plates and two glasses of wine.
Great Dining in Skokie. The food and service were fantastic. Scallops, shrimp and lamb were all delicious. Great cocktails as well. It’s a small place so be prepared to squeeze in, but it is definitely worth it.
Libertad. This is a great new restaurant in Skokie. We really enjoyed our meal. The duck in a celery root puree was awesome. The drinks were not bad either.
Great New Place. I was so pleased to find this restaurant… The food is made with such care… It tastes like they love what they do!!!I’ve been there 4 times now and had tried a couple different dishes every time… So far I have loved every one of them…Service is nice and simple… A great place to relax with friends and not feel stuffy, but with amazing food!!
Delicioso!. The food, service and presentation were fabulous. The prices were NOT ridiculous. This cuisine might be termed Mexican fusion or Latin-influenced. There’s a nod to traditional Mexican recipes but chef Armando Gonzalez (formerly of Mas, BIN 36 and MK) knows how to throw a sparkle into each entree that while unexpected is nevertheless pleasing. The portions are a little too big to be called tapas, but you probably will not need a doggie bag either. The salmon, served with fennel, couscous, grapes and spinach with an ancho-sangria reduction drizzled over it, was divine. Lomo, featuring pork tenderloin, parsnip puree, rainbow chard, applewood smoked bacon and fig-arbol salsa was perfectly cooked and appealingly presented. Try the vegetarian items as starters. I recommend the Chipotle hummus, served with olive oil, fresh cheese, chives and chappati tortilla. The poblano tempura with goat cheese, wild mushrooms, tofu, epazote and salsa de rbol served to the table next to mine looked (and smelled) very good as well. The cocktails are well-mixed and reason in themselves to come by even if you’re not that hungry. The restaurant opened in late August 2011 and so the outdoor dining section was not all it will probably be by next year, but I can imagine this will be a romantic nightspot in, of all places, downtown Skokie. Ample parking until everyone discovers how good the food is. Once that happens, consider public transportation.
