Last of a Dying Breed. There are fewer and fewer places in Chicago, especially on the North Side, that represent one of my favorite slices of Americana: the neighborhood pub. And if a neighborhood pub that serves very good food at great prices, albeit from a llimited menu, is your cup o’ tea, then Gino’s North is a place you can’t afford to miss. The establishment has seen a variety of owners come and go since it opened it’s door in 1941, but the latest owners, who took over in February, 2007, have got the place hopping once again. It’s amazing what a good scrubbing, a new jukebox, some new carpet, and a friendly staff can do for a place’s popularity. Gino’s crowd is as diverse as the citizenry of Edgewater-Loyola. And the best part is, everyone gets along famously. Best known for Peggy’s (the primary cook for over 20 years) thin-crust pizza, Gino’s is also known for it’s intimate, Art Deco, 1940’s atmosphere. Just one warning: once you visit, you may become addicted.
