We visit Portillo’s every time we find ourselves in Chicago. As a matter of fact it is normally the first meal that we have. I can’t think of a bad item on their menu. But my recommendation is the Italian Beef (dipped w/hot peppers). When walking in don’t be afraid of the chaos. They know what they’re doing and as long as you can find the order line (flashing sign that says: order here) you will be fine. There are menus available in canisters on the wall if you want to look through it before waiting in line. You then just order, wait for your number to be called, find a table to sit at, and enjoy.
What a find! Authentic polish- cabbage rolls- pierogi-potato pancakes. All good can’t choose a favorite. Homemade sausage and juice the best reason to getoff the interstate when driving through Chicago. The welcome feeling was exceptional. Thanks Greg. We’ll be back
The kind of place I love to discover. It’s all very real. Real food, real Polish ambience, real customers. A very welcoming place. And GOOD food. Everything seems homemade, and it is fresh, tasty and filling. Pickle soup was a treat I had not had before. Well done.
Cabbage rolls were awesome. Potato pankcakes were a great combination of textures. Pierogies and all are home-cooking at it’s best.
This is an authentic, down-home neighborhood hole in the wall, with outstanding Polish staples. Dirt cheap, as casual as they come, and delicious. What’s not to love?
Why did I not come sooner?!. I’m moving in a week and a half, and I just tried this Polish hole in the wall two blocks from my current apartment for the first time today. I missed out! We got split-pea soup and pierogies (the cabbage and potato were my two favorites…I wasn’t crazy about the fruit ones, but they were interesting), but the soup was filling enough to have been a solid lunch for about $4. BIG bowl. The inside feels like an old-skool kitchen, in a very good way. My friend and I were the only people under 50 in the place, which added a note of authenticity. Unique atmosphere and hearty food = great spot for a quick after-work meal.
