We returned after dining here about a year ago, and it is amazing. Courses are dazzling to the eye and palette, original, and delicious. The flavors are complex but work together very well. And this is a place where the courses taste every bit as good as they look. A real gem in the city.
This place was really good we had gone to an other place that supposedly had really good Chicago hot dogs but this place was by far the best.. the chocolate cake shake that my husband had to have was delicious as well definitely a must go if you visit Chicago… stay away from Gene & Jude’s hot dog lol
5 course dinner is $85 per person – the only negative is that you and your dining partner have to agree to the same dishes. I know restaurants like doing this for prix fixe meals where everyone has to order the same thing but it’s not as fun for the diner. Anyhow, a redeeming part is the fact that it’s BYOB and like many places in Chicago they don’t charge you a corkage fee – how progressive. In Canadian prices, our total meal was $320 with conversion….yes it’s always way more expensive in our dollar. I’ll have to review this place if I made US dollars cause in Canadian dollars it’s too pricey LOL.Service was great and the dishes were all very interesting and well done (it does lean on the small portion size wise). There was a fantastic foie gras torchon and a salmon dish too.Overall a nice dinner in a fairly loud small dining room where you are seated very closely to the next table.
The menu is very small, as is the restaurant itself. I think we counted 32 total seats! I know they didn’t used to take reservations, but they have since changed that which is nice – especially now that I’ve seen how small the space is. We didn’t try one thing that I didn’t like. Menu standouts were: garlic fries, octopus appetizer, halibut, and veal. They also had an oyster appetizer that was really unique – 3 oysters each prepared a different way. The third was smoked with applewood chips and had a cover on it, so when you opened it up, the smoke billowed out. Delicious! Another plus is that it’s a BYOB, with a $5 corkage fee for the whole table. Not bad at all. Finally, the bathroom was so cool! It had a darkroom door leading into it, and the wall was lined with old concert promo posters.
Tried six different dishes, everyone better than the next. This is a must visit.
Feature in Bon Appetite … 2 week sabatical …. I expected a helluva wait, and was waiting around 5 on a Friday. Honestly, you could get a table for 2 without a wait I think until about 6 15.Even if you did wait the food was great. The pear/apple salad was very delicious; the garlic fries and chipotle mayo – enough to feed 4, but tasty. The entree of hanger steak, also amazing with some great veg too.The decor is cool too – cookbook pages on the ceiling and a revolving door to the bathroom (read it carefully)!
