Not as bad as you’d think. Undergoing renovations. It’s not a sign of desperation that I went to a bowling alley for lunch the other week. I just wanted to see if the Bar and Grill on the inside was worth it. As I walked in, a painter was touching up some areas as half of the place looked like it was undergoing some renovations. To be honest, it was completely dated inside with colors straight from the 80’s/90’s. It even had a garish shiny brass frame hung ceiling that I’ve never seen before. The lighting was low except for some of the neon beer signs. The first guy behind the counter told me to wait while he got another persons drink orders. I asked him a few questions such as what kind of dish he thought was the best, but he could only grunt and motion while filling the slowest 4 drinks ever. Literally he had two soda fountain guns in each hand doing one squirt from one and then one squirt from another and alternating the whole way up. What the heck? Then the owner came out after the pretend bartender went away for the rest of the meal. The owner was a real treat who talked it up with me for the course of the meal and was genuinely interesting to talk to. The more we talked, the more character the place had. Take for instance the beers on tap. You might expect a bowling alley bar to have only boring domestic national beers, right? Wrong. Half of his beers were microbrew/craft brews. He even let me sample a two of them that I never heard of before. And that’s a strong point in favor that he’s with the times and tastes of my generation. My burger and crinkle cut fries? Although i know the meat probably wasn’t fresh ground and the fries had definitely been frozen prior to frying, everything still came together nicely and nothing was omitted. My burger wasn’t just a plain-jane burger either, it was a mushroom and swiss and was very well put together. Everything tasted just like it should have and had a nice creamy consistency. Overall, Austin’s was quite the unexpected pleasure that I’m glad I sought out. So next time you’re jonesing for a burger, why not give this local business your time?
