Some of Indiana’s BEST red wines–Max’s Small Batch Unnumbered. I have been a fan of Turtle Run since they opened over 10 years ago. Jim Pfeiffer has consistently produced some of the best wines in Indiana, with reds as an especial stand out. Recently he released the latest in his Max’s Small Batch series–a series of blended reds that are complex, experimental and always tasty. The latest release, Max’s Small Batch Unnumbered is a masterpiece. The main component of the blend is a Chambourcin that has aged in oak for 99 months–that is not a typo, over 8 years of aging! The blend is rounded out by Zinfandel and Merlot. The resulting complexity makes for wine that is hard to describe, but lovely to imbibe! The wine is somewhat light in appearance, like a fine Pinot, with (surprisingly to me given its time aging) a rim that fades to a light maroon. The aroma leaps out of the glass, with the familiar vanilla/spice of a well-oaked wine. The first sip is a revelation. If you enjoy fine, very dark chocolate the experience of this wine will be familiar–at first you have a rush of flavor so intense its almost overwhelming. You take a breath and begin to taste spices, dark brambly fruit and a satiny vanilla cream. The wine is tannic, but smooth and it veritably slides down your throat. Breath deep, take another sip. . .this one is to be savored. I am not a fan of overly oaked wines–wines that are like chewing on a chip of oak, but this wine, despite being in oak for so long, does not present in that way at all. Its a balanced, lingering, lovely experience.. Only 45 cases were produced. This one won’t come around again soon.
