I went to Patties of Jamaica today because it has such a high rating (4.7 at the time of review). However, I am baffled at such a high rating. I was disappointed in the ambiance and the food and I don’t plan to return. This place is very small and looks disheveled, but not dirty. There were 2 or 3 tables there but I wouldn’t recommend dining in. The gentleman that took my order was friendly and helpful. I ordered 2 patties, goat curry stew and white rice to go. The patties were similar to an English meat pie, but the dough was not light and flaky like filo dough. The filling was just beef and seasoning/spices, no vegetables. The texture was like finely minced beef, not ground. The flavor was ok, but not as strong as I expected. I usually find that jerk seasoning and other Caribbean dishes tend to be more, well, flavorful, for lack of a better term. These patties seemed bland to me. The curry stew seemed to be a heavy, butter base that was not thick like I expected from something called a stew. Whatever grease/fat was in the stew, it congealed on my spoon while I was eating it. There weren’t many pieces of goat and they didnt seem to be butchered well as there was still lots of connective tissue. Also, the stew was served in a typical Styrofoam clamshell container, which seems like a very poor choice for a liquid carryout. When I order take-out soup, I am used to getting a Styrofoam bowl with a tight fitting plastic lid.As I said at the start, I was not impressed with the restaurant and will not be back.
No pictures yet. I have been going to ‘Patties’ since 2002. The only time I have been disappointed was when they ran out of a food I was craving. Every visit is a delight. The patties to me are the best in Indianapolis light and flavorful. The light oven baked wings are an excellent accompaniment. The curry chicken, goat or oxtail stew is always very very good, with small pieces of potatoes or butter beans in the stew or curry very nice indeed. You will love this little gem on the near North side of Indy.
I have been eating here for 30 years. Stefan and my children are about the same age, and have grown up together. Henry and the culture of Jamaican food that he brought to Indy are unique and second to none. The food here is magnificent. Many Jamaican eateries have come and gone in Indy over the years, but none could come close to the quality and taste of Patties of Jamaica.Thank you Henry, Thank you Stefan, Thank you everyone there that has made this eatery an Indianapolis institution.Viva Patties of Jamaica!
