We had heard a lot about this restaurant and distillery. We went on a Saturday evening and the staff, building, and decor are all worth the visit. The drinks are fantastic, and Eli ( I think that is his name) definitely knows how to mix a cocktail. The food – not so much. I ordered the Roasted Beet and Cauliflower and I am glad they have at least something for non-meat eaters. It was just average, meh, nothing special. I would not order it again. My partner ordered the Bass, and afterwards he does not know why he did not send it back. I tasted it as well and bland is an understatement. The fish had no taste, nor did the hominy. We will go back for the drinks, I’ll probably wait to try another meal.
This is located in the former Virginia Avenue State Bank and has the original terra cotta exterior. Built in 1924, it is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is next to the 12.05 Distillery, where their spirits are made. Inside are some distinct dining areas, booths and tables, plus a great bar (that needs more stools.) Chandeliers adorn the ceiling in one area and you can see the distillery through large windows. Our server, Marlena, was eager to serve us and made sure that all of our questions were answered. I had the Cream of Mongole soup, which was excellent and the Summer Vegetable Hash, which was not to my liking and a little bland. Probably just me. My dining buddy had the Mock Turtle Soup and said it was delicious and very beefy, and the Pimento Cheese Sandwich with bacon, which had a little too much bread and not enough pimiento cheese. All-in-all we enjoyed it and will return with our wives.
