Great atmosphere and something unique for Indy. However the food is pretty mediocre. The service is great though but the price is a little higher than what I felt it deserved to be.

Saffron Cafe is a hidden gem in Indy that’s worth visiting. It specializes in Moroccan cuisine, which is hard to find in the city. The prices are higher than your typical restaurant, but you’re paying for the quality of the food (some of the dishes require intense preparation) and the old world North African ambiance that makes the restaurant unique. The servers are extremely knowledgeable about the food and very personable, making each visit very pleasant for me. When you’re there, you must have the atay (the Moroccan mint tea) and the lamb lamberel. The lamb lamberel is phenomenal. The lamb tajine is cooked in a delectable sauce with lots of eggplant. The only average menu items are the dessert in my opinion (I’ve had baklava). For a nice treat, Saffron Cafe is well worth the price!
Avoid this place. It is an expensive restaurant with very bad food and service. My food was so salty so I couldn’t eat it. When I let our waitress know about it he didn’t do anything about it. When I was eating dessert the waitress grabbed my spoon from my hands and packed the contain of the spoon in the box. Finally I discovered on my credit card bill that they added $10 more to tips that I left.
Above and Beyond!. I tried to make a Valentine’s reservation, but was too late about 10 days in advance. Luckily they kept my contact information and called me on Valentine’s day to say they had a cancellation at the time I requested and wanted to know if I was still interested. My wife and I had been wanting to eat there for quite sometime and we didn’t have reservations elsewhere so we gladly took it. What a great Valentine gift it was. The food was excellent and the service was just as good. It was a fine dining experience we thoroughly enjoyed. We can’t wait to go back because there is so much more on the menu that we want to experience.
Just ok. We went there using a groupon. I ordered the Seafood Paella. I have worked in a seafood restaurant for 20 years. It said salmon and bay scallops on the menu, but had non in the dish I was served. The seafood was also dry/over cooked. In my opinion the sauce needed some butter/oil. My fianc got the Traditional Lam M’Rosis and was happy with it. Baklava for dessert only was one layer and was lacking moisture as well. The waiter was nice and informative, but a smile would’ve been better. They have a open kitchen concept where I saw the microwave used a lot. I know food like this is made in advance since there are hours of cook/simmer time, but there are better ways to reheat food than a microwave. I have to say I’m happy I didn’t pay full price.
Spoiled food. We were excited about this new ethnic restaurant. We went and then were impressed with the decor and the table setting. Then we got the food. We found it tasteless and totally lacking the flavor we expect of middle eastern food. I took most of my food home in a takeout container and put it in the refrigerator immediately. Later that evening took it out for a snack and got a taste of the salmon. It was so badly spoiled I was afraid of getting immediately sick. I don’t understand how a cook can use fish that is not fresh. Surely he could smell it.
