It's good, but a little pricey. Mustard is brain numbingly hott. Likely the best German place in town, but prepare to pay for it. Great German feel…

Disappointing. At a convention in town I decided to try this place, I like german food, I heard it was the best german food in town. Must be low standards.I didn’t know what to expect, so this isn’t really a restaurant as a huge multivenue building. It was obviously very busy, we had reservations, but without them it was over a 2 hour wait, so maybe with that demand the restaurant doesn’t feel the need to try harder. The dining rooms were a warren of connected passageways and stairways, the chairs were really cheap banquet style chairs, did not give a good vibe. The meal came with bread, rolls and pretzles, the bread was good. It came with two dipping sauces. Ridiculously hot mustard, and cheese from a jar. I’ve had better pretzle cheese dip at Applebees, and I hate Applebees. I ordered schniztle, it was okay, just okay. The sauce wasn’t anything. I also got spaetzle, this was actively bad spaetzle. I don’t think I’ve ever had such bad spaetzle to be honest. It was also lukewarm only, like it had been sitting, the sauce was congealing, like I said, actively bad. My wife had schnitzle parmesean, which was kinda blah, for a dish you can get at almost any restaurant anywhere (schitzle parmesean, chicken/pork/veal milanese, chicken parmesean, we’re all talking the same thing more or less here). The whole plate was lukewarm, if it is such a stretch from the kitchen how about plate covers to keep some heat in? My son had chicken cordon bleu rolls, these were actually pretty good. I tried his of course. I’m not sure they weren’t a frozen food item though. Desert was the high point, the german chocolate cheesecake, very good. Would I ever go there again? For drinks and desert maybe, not for food. For the price I thought it was also a very poor value I’d give it hospital cafeteria quality.
Steeped in History. This was a good experience. This night there were probably 400-500 restaurant patrons during the course of the evening, all served from one kitchen. Not a problem. We were served promptly and received our food in a reasonable amount of time. First, we were given a basket of bread with a large pretzel. Good, but watch out for the mustard. It will take your breath away. They warned us. I had a large salad and my wife’s baked potato. Very good. My wife had chicken over a bed of rice. It was a chicken breast sliced very thin. Tasty, but a little dry. Prices are reasonable. It’s noisy and crowded downstairs but quieter upstairs. I like either. Soak up the history of the Athenaeum.
Great environment. Amazing blues in the bar the other night. Had the wurst plate and..hold it..hold it…here it comes…it was the best. Too loud to talk, but my date had nothing to say. Fortunately, he was cute.
Over Priced – Underwhelmed. We were a party of four last evening. We had a reservation and we were looking forward to our time there. We sat at a table with fold up legs and in low quality chairs. The Men’s room smelled bad and there were bits of drywall coming off the ceiling in there. The food was of fair quality – but it didn’t really tickle our fancy. Our server was not attentive. We sat with empty glasses for quite a while. The bill for our mediocre experience was just under $200. I don’t mind spending good money on a great meal and a great experience. If you absolutely love German food you still might like this restaurant – but we will not be going back.
Great Oxtail Soup. The venue is what it’s all about: an impressive and historic old German structure with a gemtlich Rathskeller.Good selection of German beers, but poor selection of some of the excellent German spirits. The oxtail soup [Ochsenschwanzsuppe] when freshly made is outstanding and the cold platter is quite good.Schnitzels are pork, not veal, and do not measure up to German/Austrian quality. Otherwise, much of the food they offer is rather ordinary American pub food. This is a place to enjoy a beer with a good German pretzel and have a pleasant, relaxed visit with friends.
A Bit of Germany in Indy. If the beautiful building and biergarten isn’t enough to draw you in, the food should finish you off. While the menu looks a bit pricey (about $20 an entree), you get a large amount of delicious food. Beware of the spicy mustard though. Delicious if you like horse radish, a catastrophe waiting to happen if you take a large scoop without knowing what it is. You also can’t go wrong with the large beer selection.
Owner was drunk. The owner was drunk on the job, bad experience.
