Wonderfully cute a kitschy little spot. We stopped to buy some German chocolates and licorice. Our family can only go so long before stocking up. We were very pleased! They had everything we were looking for plus tons more. We loved it and we will definitely return.
Awesome restaurant. Our first time visiting, it was a great experience , and a great gift shop so many choices to choose from plenty of German merchandise including grocery items simply amazing! We had the sausage platters with the best german potato salad we had ever had, desert was black forrest cake was delicious, bakery items so many to choose from we took home extra loaf of the rye bread which the blonde lady sliced for us and helped us choose our pastries, which all looked deliciousOur waitress the red head was especially helpful with choosing our sausage platters since we had no clue which one’s suited our taste , service was slow, but so worth the wait.
Limited menu, somewhat slow, but simply wonderful! And a fabulous shopping experience while you wait. One of a kind.
Super dooper AWESOME place. I love this place!!! I just discovered it, and I am Madly in love with it. the food was EPIC. I loved the sausage platter that my waitress recommended, and the dessert that the other waitress said was a must have. I thought the service was out of this world, I had two younger ladies helping me a blonde, and a red head that I later discovered is part of the family. They both treated me super nice, were fun to chat with and made the whole experience unforgettable. They certainly added to the charm of the Heidelberg. If you are ever bored or just want to do something fun and different go into this place it is an experience you’ll never forget!!
The torch has extinguished. I regret to say that this place is not what it once was. And unwittingly, one of Indianas unique cultural icons seems to have found itself at a crossroads. The patriarch Juergen Jungbauer, called JJ by friends and family, has advanced in age and is basically semi-retired. And lamentably, he lacks the fortitude to do what needs to be done at his establishment, that is, to fire a few bad apples that are spoiling the whole lot. His reluctance to discipline his own daughter is at the core of the problem, and disappointingly the poor man has no sons to carry on his legacy. So his youngest daughter Angi essentially runs the place now. However, the torch has not been passed so smoothly and there is currently a lack of professionalism there. Regrettably, at times Angi seems to have the maturity of a teenager. Besides being unnecessarily flirtatious, loud, and determined to be the center of attention, she often utters things in front of customers that would be better kept to herself, saying things like Is it 5 oclock yet, i.e., time to go home. Thats if shes not badmouthing regulars who she doesnt like, socializing with friends while ignoring customers, or isnt preoccupied with her cell phone. Unfortunately, one of the waitresses, who is younger than her, and who seems to be more friend than employee, has followed her example and tends to behave in a similar manner. And without strong leadership, said blond-haired, blue-eyed employee disgraces the reputation of her employer by showing up to work late, complaining about having to work too many hours, leaving a mess for her coworkers to clean up when she leaves, and most significantly not serving customers she doesnt like and leaving the more unpleasant ones for her coworkers to deal with. This is especially damning considering that some of these customers have been frequenting the establishment for over 40 years! I suppose its a good place to go if you want to put up with catty, gossipy, petty, moody, and two-faced women. Of course, for many of us, we can get that sort of drama elsewhere. Also, a few of the regulars are deserving of criticism. It just shouldnt be done in front of other customers and some of the staff seems to have no filter!
Need a cake people will talk about? this is the place!. The place is great for a nice lunch, brauts and hot potato salad no place beats it. The staff is busy but always nice and happy to serve you. However for me the draw is the Cakes! They have catered several events for me, with both standard cakes and special one that were created just for me. Every single time, I get stopped over and over by people saying that these cakes are the best they have ever had. They have done wedding, anniversary, birthday party, and retirement party cakes for me. Now every time there is an event at work or in my group of friends they all ask me to take them to the Heidelberg Haus for thier special day cakes!
Cafe, Bakery, Grocery and Nic-Nac Haven. The Heidlelberg Haus is a hard placed to define, because it’s a whole bunch of things in one place. But what it is, is all things German. It’s interesting and fun… and definitely worth the visit.THE CAFE: This truly is a caf rather than a restaurant. It’s small place with a small menu, where you can get drinks and simply prepared food. Delicious, tasty food. Mostly a wide variety of German sausages and smoked meat. Each sausage has its own flavor, and is usually served with potato salad and bread. Their homemade rye is …wow. They also have a smoked pork chop… one of my favorites. OR….you could always stop for coffee and a slice of cake. Which leads us to…..THE BAKERY: Their cakes are awesome, delicious, tasty, wonderful…..there aren’t enough adjectives to describe them. We got our wedding cake here many years ago. We had left over food from our reception…there was no left over wedding cake though. We go back for anniversary cakes, birthday cakes….or we make up a reason. They make wonderful breads, and have a fabulous homemade, soft pretzel.THE GROCERY: Do you need German products…sauces, mixes, condiments, jams, jellies….they have them. You can even get sausages, cheeses, herrings…etc.NIC-NAC’s: They are everywhere. You can spend hours wandering thru the place looking at them all…steins, glasses, signs, magnets, doo-dads, gee-gaws….you name it. Some are part of the dcor, and not for sale. However, most of them are…and again, they are all over the place. If you’re short on time, stop by and pick up a slice of cake….it will bring you back. If you’ve got time, do yourself a treat and just wander…
