Disappointed – chips were thin and crispy but fried in old grease. Pork wet burrito, steak torta and fish tacos were bland and flavorless.

Fresh and tastey food! I had fish tacos on corn tortillas Mexican style. Fish was grilled not deep fried, yay! My husband loved his entree but don’t recall the name. Chips & salsa were good too. Thin & crispy with a little kick. A little hard to find but worth it. The strip mall faces north & perpendicular to Franklin. Decor outside & in needs work, worn down.

Best mexican food in Michigan City. The first time we went here was when it first opened a couple of years ago. After living in the Pilsen neighborhood in Chicago for several years, we are spoiled with good, authentic Mexican food. We’ve been to the popular place down the street and it was more Tex than Mex. So we were delighted to get something that finally resembles what we’ve been eating for years. The service has improved since they’ve opened which is a plus. The Horchata is delicious, not too sweet, not too watery. The tamales are great. The chile rellenos are consistently good. We’ve not experienced the ‘dry’ burrito another reviewer had nor the lack of meat in the asda. The food has always been consistently good no matter the choice. The combo menu is a great way to try several different things at once.

Still needs some work. After reading the reviews I took a few friends to El Cajete and while most of the dinners were good the Wet Burrito I ordered came out dry and had very little meat. I ordered it with carne asada and honestly I don’t think there was 10 small pieces of steak in the large burrito. I had to cover it in chip sauce to get it down and ended up taking half of it home. My wife which is Hispanic tried to eat it for lunch the next day and said it was the worst burrito she thinks she’s ever eaten. Just a large portion of bland Mexican rice wrapped in a flour tortilla was her description. The other guests had the fajitas and tamales and all 3 said they were good so it looks like I just got unlucky by ordering the large wet burrito which some how came from the kitchen as a large dry burrito (both inside and out). Now the real treat of this place was the dessert. OMG, I should have just ordered the sopapilla first and just skipped the burrito. Their carmel sopapillas are to die for. I was so impressed I snapped a picture of mine to add to the review. Lastly the girls loved the margaritas. They had the strawberry and the mango ones. They said they would have never guessed they were made with wine. They highly recommend them.

Muy autntico. By far the most autentic Mexican restaurant in MichiganCity.Best guacamole by far better than the more popular place down the street.I have ordered almost all the taco meats (except the lingua), and the flavor and quality is excellent.Bypass the rest and get the best.

We thought this place was great! The rice was amazing and our burritos were delicious. Great chips and salsa too!

Inconsistent Food. I have visited El Cajete on a few occassions and have noticed inconsistencies in the availability of certiain items as well as the taste of the food. On my lastest visit last weekend, the rice and beans were very tasteless and the salsa was watery. Service is also hit and miss. They always have new servers.
