We got take out meals. The fruit place was ok but some of the melon was obviously frozen in recent past. The Chicken and Noodles was very disappointing. The noodles while good we very few in number. The chicken was even more sparse – maybe it came from a single wing. I had to ask for the rolls I requested in my order. Seems like a place that has gotten too big for it’s own good.
I was a little thrown off by the dining options available (ie. buffet, family style, or menu style). Opted for buffet and it was a good home style buffet…awesome. The blackberry pie was indescribably good. Every bite pleased my palate…yum! I’m salivating as I write about it!
It was ok. Although the line to get into the restaurant was very long, it moved quickly. The server was very friendly, although not very attentive. Everyone working was very busy, which I think made them more intense. The food was okay, not great. Because this restaurant is a big deal in the Amish country; we expected it to be better than average. Go with an open mind… well known restaurant in the area, but average to below average food.
Home Cookin’. Well, if you had an Amish grandma cooking at your house! Outstanding! A huge place, but Friday lunch was still pretty busy. This is a tourist destination, but no tourist trap! Service was good and very friendly. Food is excellent and a great value…lunch buffet was $10.50, dinner is only $12.50. Super tender pot roast-type roast beef and crunchy/juicy fried (broasted?) chicken, delicious soups, nice salad bar, and all the sides were yummy too….mashed potatoes, gravy, noodles, dressing, veggies. What? No room for dessert? ( probably not!)….well, at least get some of their outrageously good home-made pies to go…about 30 varieties. FYI Priced separately by the slice, not included in buffet, but NOT TO BE MISSED! Or go over to the bakery section after dinner and get a whole pie (or two!) to take home for about $12 each, a real bargain! This will be our plan on future visits, the only problem will be picking what flavor! They also have a separate menu-dining area, and serve dinners family-style as well. This is a must-stop if you are anywhere in Northern IN or southern MI.
Very good value — we are stuffed and the bill with pie to go added was under $30.00. The chicken is moist and flavourful, the mashies creamy — SRS loved the dressing. Really great experience.
Early Easter Dinner. Our family has eaten at Das Essenhaus many times, and always family style and always great food. However, this year on the day before Easter, it was different. The fried chicken was dry, as was the dressing, which was also burnt on the edges. This was our Easter dinner (there were 10 of us) and it was very disappointing. My husband says we will not go back again.
Food was very good… My husband and I tried the family style… Probably the best chicken I have ever had.. Wait staff was friendly and the place was very clean…. Downside: very over priced…. 16.95 a person for family style. I know we didn’t eat 36 worth of food… Salad was not very good and home made noodles were bland and salty..
