Outstanding Meal and Philanthropy. Chef Ryan Nelson of Late Harvest Kitchen is not only an outstanding chef but also a supporter of good causes. Last November, he donated a five course meal for 4 to the Women for Change Coaching Community, a non-profit that offers coaching for low income women who wish to make positive and lasting change in their lives. My significant other won the meal, so I was lucky enough to be invited. The couple who joined us had recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary, and I had asked if we could include a champagne toast to celebrate. Instead of adding it to the bill, Chef Nelson incorporated Domaine Chandon Brut into our first course which was a lovely Caviar Pie. The second course was their Shaved Brussels Sprout Salad, which I love and have had several times, paired with an LHK Chardonnay. Third course was a perfectly cooked Maple Glazed Quail in a barley porridge with sweet potatoes, cabbage and caraway, paired with a Steele Pinot Noir. The main course was a choice between Ahi Tuna with Forest Mushrooms in a Red Wine reduction or a Ribeye Cap. The wine pairing for that one was a Malbec, and I was pleasantly surprised that it went equally well with either dish. Finally, for dessert, it was their Sticky Toffee Pudding with whipped cream paired with a not too sweet Sandeman Ruby Porto. I tell you all of these details because everything was wonderfully prepared and flavorful, and the wine pairings were masterful. Just perfect for the dishes Chef Ryan selected. We’ve been to Late Harvest many times, and on the very rare occasion, we’ve been disappointed in some part of the meal, but this experience renewed our excitement for this restaurant, and I very highly recommend it! Enjoy, and Happy New Year.
